County Board Planning Second Highway Garage

The McHenry County Transportation Department, once called the Highway Department, is planning to relocate about half of its vehicles and equipment somewhere south of its current Hartland Township location.

Before moving to Nelson Road, the Department was housed where the Jewel shopping center is now located–prime retail space.

The highway garage for McHenry County is located northwest of Woodstock.

The County Board sold the property (without soliciting bids, as I remember the deal) and off to the great Northwest all the equipment went.

Now, it seems that a decision has been made to open a satellite facility “south.”

No location was revealed, making observers wonder if an entirely new complex will be constructed or an empty building purchased and remodeled.

The County Board voted Tuesday to accept the 2014-2018 Transportation Program.

Contained within a section labeled “Miscellaneous Program” is the following:

Regional Salt Storage Facility

On page 25 of that section is the following:

McDot salt storage facility 7-1-14 top$5 million is scheduled to be spent this Fiscal Year, as you can see.

Perhaps it is time for some intergovernmental cooperation.

Both Nunda and Algonquin Township have large properties for their road districts.

  1. Why are we planning for MORE salt on our roads?

Already we have test results showing this salt is polluting our water supply!

At the rate we are going we will need to add desalinization plants to our water supply.

What will private well owners do?

  2. Instead of building / purchasing for more County salt storage, how about forcing Township and Municipal plows to keep their plows down while driving on County Roads via intergovernmental agreements.

THEY ALREADY HAVE SALT STORAGE AND ARE LOCATED IN THE AREAS WHERE THE COUNTY WANTS TO PLACE ANOTHER COUNTY EDIFICE!

    WAKE UP!!!!

Local townships and municipalities perform snow plowing at much lower costs per mile than the County.
