Three Seek County Board Chairmanship

Two years from now, ordinary citizens will know who is going to be McHenry County Board Chairman when December swearing in time comes around. That’s because the person will be elected at the November election.

This year, however, those wishing the post are seeking support from the other twenty-three Republicans elected on Tuesday.

There are three candidates seeking the office:

Joe Gottemoller

    • Tina Hill, who is the current chairman and who is seeking to break free of what seems to be an alcohol problem
John Hammerand

John Hammerand

  • Joe Gottemoller, who ran first in his first re-election campaign, despite angering Oakwood Hills area residents by representing the power plant interests, and
  • John Hammerand, a veteran Board member targeted for defeat by the Democrats for the second election in row who also ran first.

Gottemoller ran for Chairman right after he was sworn in.  Fellow freshmen Mike Skala and Carolyn Schofield voted for him.

Any frustration that members of the public may have about the secret machinations leading up to the December public vote will have to borne.

Three Seek County Board Chairmanship — 9 Comments

  1. This should be a no-brainer but then the majority on the Board have forgotten how to use theirs.

Choice: A person with a substance abuse issue that she should be working on every day vs a guy who really gives a crap about the citizens of this county and Hammerand who works tirelessly on behalf of the voters.

    What a choice!

Watch them screw this one up!!

Start attending the Board meetings and give these fools your input!!

They need all the help they can get!!!!!!

Lobby the newbies to do the right thing!!

Wheeler, Kopsell (good luck with that one), Gasser, Rein (in Skala’s back pocket) and Smith (total unknown other then he wants more houses built so he can sell them).

Hopefully we have some honest hard working citizens waiting to run for office in 2016 because the current board is full of very inept people who serve for their best interest instead of the taxpayer.

  2. I would have to say Hammerand would be the best choice out of these three.

  3. Hammerand by a mile ………… I’d even take Tiny Tina before Smokin’ Joe the Oakwood Hills Fixer … at least she tells the truth 10% of the time.

  4. I would agree John Hammerand would easily be my 1st choice over the others.

  5. Yeah, so I sat in the booth next to Hammerand, Kurtz, Walkup and a couple of others at a local restaurant a couple of weeks ago and this vote was certainly a topic of overheard conversation (if you’re going to discuss the public’s business in public, I’m not going to feel bad about eavesdropping, even if it didn’t really take that much to hear everything…).

So look for Kurtz, Walkup, and the new crop of ‘tea party-ish’ members (Rein, Gasser, Wheeler, etc) to strongly come out lobbying for Hammerand.

John’s a nice guy and there’s something to be continuously re-elected by the folks in Wonder Lake.

But he seems a little too nice.

As in, perhaps nice enough to be handled by stronger personalities behind the scenes.

    Maybe that’s the point though.

It’s no secret that John has a home out of state at which he spends very long chunks of time.

I think it’s in Florida, which corresponds with the flight during cold weather.

I haven’t looked at attendance records at board and committee meetings in a while, but I’m guessing they still disclose something of a patter of absence.

One wonders how that would dovetail with the demands of the chairmanship ….unless the real decisions were made by an unofficial committee of handlers.

Which leads me back full circle to the Pancake Caucus of a few weeks ago.

I think if those folks want to take over the County Board, they should be up front about it and not try to do so by getting someone elected who is inoffensive in every sense of the word, but who they feel they can manipulate.

    Well, my $.02 anyway.
