The free food distributed at the First United Methodist Church of Crystal Lake has moved to the Nunda Township complex on Bay Road for the winter.
Nunda Township’s offices are located between Route 31 and what Crystal Lakers call the McHenry Blacktop. On the map below, the road is called Walkup Road.
The truck from the Northern Illinois Food Bank arrives about 10 AM, but a line starts earlier than that. I’ve never been there when it starts, but I’ve heard 9 o’clock mentioned.
Numbers are given to people as they arrive.
Groups of five are allowed in to fill a box with food provided by local grocery stores.
Until last week there was always plenty of fruits and vegetables.
This is an unpredictable selection of dry goods. Last week, for example, there were four boxes of Halloween candy and two of salt water taffy.
There often is enough meat (much frozen) for people to get two selections.
Every week there has been more than enough bread and desserts.
What is not distributed ends up being fed to pigs.

In addition, the Northern Illinois Food Bank truck will arrive at Crystal Lake Methodist Church (corner of Dole and West Crystal Lake Avenues–both streets have traffic lights on Route 14) at 4 PM. Soup will be served inside starting at 3:30. Numbers will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
That long line of loafers doesn’t look like they’ve missed too many meals.
That’s a nasty comment.
