Tryon & Andersson Names to State School Aid Formula Committee

A combination of press releases from State Rep. Mike Tryon and Steve Andersson:

Rep. Mike Tryon Selected to Serve on Bipartisan Task Force on Education Funding

SPRINGFIELD…..State Representative Mike Tryon (R-Crystal Lake) was appointed this week to serve on a bipartisan 23-member task force that will study how school funding is distributed to Illinois school districts and come up with recommended changes to the funding formula.

Tryon was a vocal opponent last year of Senator Andy Manar’s SB16, which sought to fundamentally rewrite the school funding formula in a way that was very punitive to the taxpayers of the 66th Legislative House District.

“This attempt to adjust school funding by creating a new list of winners and losers is very serious in this area, and I am pleased to see this bipartisan task force taking shape,” said Tryon.

“I was one of the primary proponents of creating this type of task force so that an in-depth study could be completed prior to any vote on a significant change to the funding formula.”

Representative Steve Andersson was honored to be named to this task force, and ready for the challenge of passing this new and improved legislation,

“The current education funding system is outdated and desperately needs to be reviewed.  The Task Force will review this legislation and ensure that the most efficient and effective system can be in place to benefit Education as a whole, statewide.”

According to Tryon, last year’s SB16 has been refiled with a few minor modifications this year as SB1. The new bill has been discussed at the committee level in Springfield, but no preliminary votes have taken place. “It is my hope that Senator Manar will step back from his bill while the task force completes its work,” he said.

Tryon is one of 10 Republicans who will join 13 Democrats from the House of Representatives on the task force. They will hold their first meeting next week on Wednesday, March 11 at 3:00 PM in Springfield. At that time the task force will organize, set its objectives and arrange a future meeting schedule.

“The task force includes representation from Chicago and the collar counties, and also from downstate legislators in central and southern Illinois,” Tryon said. “I will continue to work toward a fair and equitable solution that allows all students to have optimal opportunities for success.”

  1. This is a redistribution of wealth from the more property tax rich school districts that would leave a void they would want to replace with non referendum bonds or another source of revenue.
