Conservation Plantings Urged at MCC

Driving toward McHenry County College from Ridgefield Road Thursday night I noticed the swales along the side of the road on the campus.

There was grass in the ditches.

Can’t tell you where I heard a presentation by a college administrator that such waterways would be planted in more water absorbing foliage, but I did.

Maybe it was during the promise-making before the Crystal Lake Planning and Zoning Commission when MCC was seeking permission to build the minor league baseball stadium.

In any event, the proposal popped into my head.

Cal Skinner talks about planting swails in something other than grass.

I arrived in time for public comment and shared my thoughts.

President Vicky Smith looked as if she had never heard the idea.

Since she was not here for the proposal to put taxpayers on the hook for a $25 million baseball stadium, I guess that is understandable.
