Silence -> Higher Taxes

Got this from former McHenry County Board member Ersel Schuster and have permission to share it with you:

Kicking the Can Isn’t Going to Cut It Anymore

As residents, taxpayers and voters in McHenry County, it is time for us to become more involved with those we elect to various government offices.

To not be involved and failing to voice our comments and concerns to these folks in a timely manner, we give them a blank check and say… have-at-it!

In the world of today’s politician, they take our silence to mean they’re doing what we want.

They think we agree with the way they are spending the tax money they’ve extracted from us.

They believe we trust them.

When we choose to take this hands-off position, unfortunately, we lose our right to complain.

A recent McHenry County Board meeting provides a small glimpse as to why we may want to rethink our disengagement with those we elect to represent us.

The new McHenry County Board is composed of all Republicans.

The new McHenry County Board is composed of all Republicans.

To those less familiar with the internet, access the McHenry County Board’s website (https://www.co.mchenry.il.us); at the top of the “home” page, access the “County Meetings.”

On the left side of the page, in the drop down menu, choose “county board.”

Go to the May 19, 2015 county board meeting; click on “audio” for this meeting; move the audio bar to 1:21:10.

At this point in the recording you can hear a discussion on whether or not the county board will take a “levy increase.”

Note that in layman’s terms “levy increase” means increasing the amount of real estate tax money they want us to “contribute” to running county government for the fiscal year 2015/16.

Next, move down the audio bar to 2:14:10, near the end of this recording.

At this point, discussion begins on establishing another county task force.

As outlined, appointees will come from the same old list of the county’s “movers & shakers.”

This membership will include county department personnel, elected officials and select agency representatives.

Direction given these task force members is that they research and develop a report explaining

“Why people are leaving McHenry County”

In these discussions, several members express concern that their funding sources will be reduced and suggest a need to “shrink” the cost of county government.

Citizens of McHenry County Against Higher Property TaxesIn political terms “funding sources” equals our money; money they expect to collect through

  • numerous state & federal taxes
  • real estate taxes
  • sales taxes
  • “grants (tax dollars)”
  • fuel taxes
  • communication taxes…
  • and on it goes

Over and over again, members are quick to pronounce their personal satisfaction in not having taken an increase in the real estate tax levy over the last three years and plan to do the same this year.

That is definitely a positive; however, they do not take credit for postponing the inevitable.

Past avoidance of levy increases have been accomplished by reducing the number of pens, paper clips, copy paper, and other office supplies consumed by the county.

It meant that “capital” projects and equipment purchases have been delayed or ignored.

This has enabling members to claim they have balanced budgets.

While reality is about to force itself to the forefront, too many county board members continue living in the “squeeze, pretend & delay” mode.

County officials proposing the new task force have also been heard to say that our real estate taxes are not too high.

These same board members claim to be “living in the real world” and argue in support of keeping the door open to raising the levy on property taxes.

Proof of the mental disconnect is when confronted with a roll call vote, it seems all 24 voted “no” to increasing the levy.

It would seem that it is one thing to voice positions, it is another thing when anti-taxpayer positions are made part of the official record. This makes it impossible for them to hide behind anonymity, thus the flip-flop.

Reality is that approximately 3/4th of the county budget ($245,000,000+) is for salaries and benefits. In other words, we’re dealing with the “third-rail” of county government. Never mind that services are being duplicated and/or, unnecessary.

Over the prior 6 years.

A lone voice continued to call attention to the need for taking a long hard look at the services county government provides.

Unfortunately, no one stepped forward to join the effort.

The lack of enthusiasm on the part of public officials for such a project, may have worked out better in the end.

Frankly, the idea of reducing county government is beyond the scope of their pay grade and Heaven forbid, they would need to make hard decisions.

The project actually needs to be addressed by a group of taxpayers; folks who have excellent business and financial credentials and good researching skills.

The usual suspects need not step up; nor should there be anyone connected to any of the entities feeding at the public trough.

The ultimate goal of such a group would be expose a sampling of factual and doable recommendations for reducing county government. In other words, there will be no sacred cows.

Every department and/or entity, under direct control of the county board, as well as those departments with elected officials, should be fair game.

Silence -> Higher Taxes — 27 Comments

  1. Never trust an elected official, make them justify spending every dime.

There should be no levy increase or any other tax increases without a 2/3 vote for approval from us.

As the wind blows votes by politicians got the Fed a 18T debt, and no borrowing at all, even short term without our 2/3 vote.

  2. Someone tell me that Skala isn’t going for Tryon’s job. Please………………

  3. It’s too late now …

People have come to realize that the economic problems of Illinois will never be turned around in their lifetimes
and they are voting with their feet – and taking their wealth
    with them.

You don’t want to be the last one out when the SHTF.

  4. We can trust people like Chairman Gottemoller and Tina Hill. It’s the tea party crazies you have to watch out for and Ersel is one of them.

So I wonder how that new GOP feels now?

  5. Taxed Enough Already is crazy in the minds of taxeaters.

Clawbacks are possible if people understand they’ve been duped.

  6. DeFacto?

Not likely that anyone is going to take that advice and trust a drunken pill-popper.

Someone is crazy alright, but it’s not Ersel.

  7. Typical response by ‘DeFacto’ – nothing constructive, just attack by calling people ‘crazy’.

    Is that not ‘hate’ speech?

  8. The County Board may entirely consist of people who were elected with an ‘R’ behind their name but that does not mean they will adhere to the ‘R’ platform.

Ersel was one of the few honest conservatives on the Board who actually attempted to adhere to the ‘R’ platform and what was the response of the voters?

They replaced her with a guy who votes which ever way he is told to.

BTW those of you posting relative to having the voters DECIDE what tax increases we should have may want to consider that the Senior Tax, Valley Hi tax, Mental Health Board tax and every ‘special’ bond issuance by schools and other units of government were APPROVED by the voters.

Voting Schuster out and Smith in was another vote in support of increased taxes – just look at how Smith votes.
Face it! Illinois voters are easily manipulated!

Just look at who wins the primaries!

Just look at Springfiled and D.C.

Conservatives (the ones who can afford to take a loss on their real estate) are leaving Illinois in droves.

Ken Griffin and Bruce Rauner are attempting to turn this state around by using their own money to save this State but will it work?

  9. What about mixing up Crowdsourcing with greed to reduce taxes?

If there was a website that had every budget for every taxing body posted, and then had cash prizes for cost saving identified by users, every accounting student in the country could offer budget saving measures.

Of course if you’re really want to pay less tax right now there is a simple answer.

Just hire Madigan’s law firm to cut your tax bill.

He is supposed to very good at this, in part because he know’s a guy in Springfield.

  10. Come on boys and girls…

    Get serious.

The only way to reduce taxes is to reduce the “wants” by public officials.

It is going to take a lot of hard work doing what politician are too scared to do.

  11. Nice article Ersel.

We miss you on the Board.

Of course, one Board member spoke against not taking the levy and gave a voice vote against but changed when a roll call was requested.

  12. Thanks, Michael… I miss “some” of you too.

    Keep the pressure on.

Even though we do not always agree…

I so much respect your efforts.

  13. The RINO’s on the county board wouldn’t know how to save tax dollars and uphold their oath to the tax payers if their lives depended on it.

They all are looking to feed from the tax payer trough.

It sickens me. Ersel tried to reign in the spending.

    She is really missed.

To heck with hill and gottemeiler.

They have proven they are out for themselves.

    Wake up voters.

  14. Don’t you get it Ersel, those anonymous teabaggers are serious.

They think people like Mike Tryon and Geri Davis are bad for the party.

They think people who have spent lifetimes serving the people are bad people.

2016 can’t get here soon enough.

  15. I think that any condescending jerk that keeps using disgusting filthy language to describe ANY group of others is a complete moron or a troll.

    Take your pick!

  16. Mike Scala does not live in Tryon’s district.

    There is another.

  17. Kicking the can is hell.

    It’s evil.

    It’s manipulative.

It’s a key component of Cullerton / Madigan / (formerly Quinn) / (formerly Blagojevich) / (formerly all Illinois Governors since 1970).

It’s taxing future taxpayers to benefit current taxpayers.

It’s a way of life in many Illinois county governments and the state government.

What do you think will happen when you charge the credit card.

It’s goodies now at the expense of future goodies.

  18. btw Reality.

I would not focus on party or ideological labels when it comes to the County Board.

In McHenry County the Republicans are Democrats and the Democrats are Republicans.

The division on the Board is between those people who are skeptics when it comes to what they are being told and those who are “frogs on a log” and sit there quietly and vote the way the majority votes (ribbbittt).

When we had Democrats on the Board they fell in line immediately with the Republican majority.

There are some litmus test votes you can look at and see how people lined up.

Maybe Cal can publish those at some point.

  19. Wait a minute, didn’t Ersel support stinky Zinke?

Yes, defacto will be the new McHenry GOP chairman.

Anyone who hates the tea party as much as he does certainly has an advantage.

Geri Davis supported Democrats for County Board.

She will be the next executive director of the Republican Party.

The conservatives should look at joining the Democratic party.
