Shindig Next Saturday at McHenry Park

A press release from Patriots in the Park:

Patriots in the Park Family Fun Day set Aug. 15

McHENRY — The third annual Patriots in the Park Family Fun Day will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Veterans Memorial Park, 1450 Court St., McHenry.

“This year we really wanted to bring back the hometown picnic,” said Marianne Ruiz, founder and president of Joe’s Wish, the nonprofit that coordinates Patriots in the Park.

“We are excited to bring in more free games and kids’ activities, plus a dunk tank.

“Don’t miss out on the adult or kids hula hoop, pie-eating contests and yard jockey dice races, with cash and prizes awarded.”

New this year will be Field of Honor Flags. Presented by the Veterans Network Committee, the 8-foot flags will be displayed Thursday, Aug. 13, through Saturday, Aug. 15.

The tribute includes one flag for each Illinois military member who died while serving during the Gulf, Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

Patriots in the Park will feature posting of the colors at 10 a.m. by the Combined Veterans of McHenry, who also will perform Taps prior to a memorial balloon release at 4 p.m.

Also on hand will be 50-50 raffles, tickets to win a trip to Vegas, vendors, crafters, business and veterans’ organization booths. Visitors can enjoy music throughout the event, with a disc jockey playing ’60s and ’70s music from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the Motown sounds of Peter and the Versatiles starting at 1 p.m.

Food and drink will be provided by Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 188, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600 and Chain O’ Lakes Brewing Co.

Among raffle items will be a mission-certified U.S. flag donated by retired Chief Warrant Officer 3 Jenice Henderson. A former Apache attack helicopter pilot with the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division, Henderson deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq during her 20-year military career. Meet her at the raffle booth from noon to 2 p.m.

“Patriots in the Park is our way to give back to a community of patriots who have been so supportive in helping us raise funds supporting our local military families, veterans and veterans’ causes,” Ruiz said.

“As always, we thank our chief event sponsors. This year, they are CLM Insurance, Adams Auto Body and Service Center, Midwest Homes, VFW Men’s Auxiliary and Century 21 Algonquin.”
