Criticism of Dems’ Tax Freeze Bill

Governor Bruce Rauner continues to send out parts of editorials that support his Turnaround Agenda.

Today, he aims at the Democrats’ tax freeze bill.

Here are the parts of an editorial found in the Bloomington Pantograph and the Decatur Herald & Review that Rauner emphasized:

Rauner pointed out that the House bill had omitted the second part of his proposal that would allow local governments more control over what is negotiated in collective bargaining sessions with public employee unions…

Rauner said that without the ability to control costs, a two-year property tax freeze would offer taxpayers short-term relief while causing long-term harm because property taxes would have to increase significantly after the freeze expired

The bill approved by the House is pretty cynical; it’s a tax freeze in name only.

Criticism of Dems’ Tax Freeze Bill — 5 Comments

  1. The Illinois policy institute was very much in favor of House Bill 89 which they called common sense reforn.

Why is the governor standing in the way of getting anything/something done?

  2. I agree with Rauner as far as he goes: freezing taxes without giving local governments the ability to control costs through collective bargaining and repealing prevailing wage mandates does nothing more than build up a veritable tsunami of increases when the freeze is lifted.

The real drivers of higher local taxes are education and pensions, neither of which can be fixed at the local level.

The answer to education funding and reforming pensions lies in Springfield.

Anyone who runs for a position in Springfield on any issues other than education, taxes (state and local), Medicaid and pension reform, while supporting common sense reforms that will create job growth in this State has no business being on the ballot.

Passing petitions for consolidating governmental units and reducing the number of people on the County Board is a way to get one’s name in the paper but will have little to no impact on the spiraling cost of government.

  3. I did some personal research and found Dems is a abbreviation of their real name:

    Debt Enlarging Maniacs.
