At the first Lake in the Hills Airport hanger fundraiser, newly-elected McHenry County Republican Chairman Sandra Salgado featured State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka in one of her last public appearances.
This year, Salgado eschewed big names and asked her brother Joe to speak.
The event was held on September 11th, a day that changed her brother’s life.
He was at West Point at the time.
Two years later at the end his senior year, it was time to select what part of the Army he would select.
He knew his roommate was going to opt for the infantry.
On the way down to where the decision would be made he was thinking about signing up for communications.
But, then, his obligation to serve with his best friends, who were going infantry overwhelmed his tentative choice.
And he ended up in Afghanistan.
He left the Armed Forces as a Captain.
I should have been taking notes because he talk was quite inspiring and nothing like the typical fare served up at political fundraisers.
The crowd’s attention was rapt.
In addition to Salgado, State Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider also addressed the audience.
Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my camera, so had to return home to get it.
That means I missed a lot of shots that I’d ordinarily post.
All four candidates for the Republican nomination for State Rep. Mike Tryon’s seat were in attendance.
Carolyn Schofield left before I caught a good photo of her.
Both candidates for Circuit Court Judge, James Cowlin and Demetri Tsilimingras, were there.
Both candidates for McHenry County Board, Joe Gottemoller and Mike Walkup, were courting support.
The three candidates for McHenry County Recorder of Deeds–Tina Hill, Joni Smith and Joe Tirio–circulated.
$15,000 was raised at the fundraiser, according to Sandra Salgado.
