Will Proft Finance Skillicorn Campaign?

With the Liberty Principles Political Action Committee of WIND Radio talk show host Dan Proft having received a $2.5 million gift for independent expenditures, who might benefit locally?

The name that came to mind was East Dundee Village Trustee Allen Skillicorn, who is running in a four-way race for the Republican nomination to replace State Rep. Mike Tryon in Springfield.

The reason is that Proft headlined a forum in Huntley in June.

Skillicorn reporting having $15,643.13 in the bank at the end of September.  Since then, he has picked up $1,384.97 from himself and $1,000 from LITH’s Jedidiah Settles, the Finance Manager of Rosen Hyunda.  There are probably other contributions of less than $1,000, but they will not be made public until sometime before the mid-January reporting date.

Skillicorn is running against Lakewood Village Trustee Paul Serwatka, who has $110,000 showing in contributions, mainly from himself.

Another male opponent is Dan Wilbrandt.  The East Dundee Trustee reported having $39,480.69 at the end of September and is supported by retiring McHenry County State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi, for whom he works.

The three guys are running against McHenry County Board member and former Crystal Lake City Councilwoman Carolyn Schofield, who has garnered Tryon’s endorsement.  $4,808.03 was all that Schofield had collected by September 30th.  Two contributions of $1,000 or more were reported since then:

  • $2,500 from Cooler Heads Prevail, Inc of Crystal Lake
  • $2,500 from the Committee to Elect Michael W. Tryon

Although well positioned because she is the only woman running to replace Tryon, showing less than $10,000 in contributions is certainly a disadvantage.

Even Serwatka, with the most money available, could be drowned in a deluge from Proft independent expenditures.

Proft has spent money in the past mainly on direct mail and cable television.

Will Proft Finance Skillicorn Campaign? — 5 Comments

  1. Campaign contributions are totally out of control!

Campaign finance laws must be changed to restrict contributions to only voters who have a permanent residence in the district which the candidate is running in.

This would eliminate the impact of corporations and unions plus the special interest pacs.

To encourage such contributions, maybe we should make them tax deductible.

Here is one link to some campaign funding totals:

  2. Watch out …

Proft always goes negative which really never helps Republicans.

  3. Proft has a pretty lousy record in competitive races, so not so sure its a good thing for Skillicorn.

This will be fun to watch.

  4. I’ve heard Proft speak.

He sounds like a liberty minded, conservative who would fall very much in line with someone like Serwatka.

Adding to this that Serwatka is certainly the most electable, and is already heavily financed, it’s hard to imagine why Proft wouldn’t lock in this seat with Serwatka rather than risk losing it to the liberal, pro-choice, spend-and-tax Schofield.
