Schofield Uses Fake Lincoln Quote

I’m disappointed that State Rep. Carolyn Schofield is using a fake Abraham Lincoln quote on her Facebook page.

A falsely attributed quotation on Carolyn Schofield's web site.

A falsely attributed quotation on Carolyn Schofield’s web site.

From Abraham Lincoln Online Speeches and Writings:

Non-Lincoln “You Cannot” Quotation

These sentiments were created by the Rev. William J. H. Boetcker, who lectured around the United States about industrial relations at the turn of the twentieth century. There is no evidence linking them to Lincoln as the author.

At one time President Ronald Reagan used them in a speech, wrongly attributing them to Lincoln. Those who are familiar with Lincoln’s writings recognize that these statements do not reflect Lincoln’s “voice,” nor can they be found in any authentic Lincoln literature.

You cannot bring prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
You cannot further brotherhood of men by inciting class hatred.
You cannot establish security on borrowed money.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.

Schofield Uses Fake Lincoln Quote — 15 Comments

  1. Completely typical of how far we have slid into the mire.

No one seems able to think for themself.

Everybody is busy trying to impress others of how elightened they have become.

This woman should stop trying to say “Look at me,” and just get out of politics.

We “the people” are slowly climbing away from people like this that serve no purpose in getting our country back to our real values and personal integrity.

  2. To me, unless you can prove who wrote it (or said it), you cannot criticize one for claiming Lincoln wrote it.

    To say,

“It doesn’t reflect the ‘voice’ or ‘literature’ of Lincoln”

reeks of the same overzealous academic BS thrown out by the left to discredit certain Biblical authorship.

    Just my opinion

  3. I saw a meme on Facebook not too long ago that read

“Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet — Abraham Lincoln”.

Skeptic, applying your test, can you prove that Lincoln didn’t say that?

He was a visionary, after all.

    Schofield is a dum-dum.

  4. Her voting record on the County Board does not even come close to living up to ANY of Boetcker’s words!

Be reminded it is legal for a politician to lie!!

  5. Skeptic, are you REALLY saying anybody can just claim anybody said anything unless someone definitively proves us wrong?

I find it hard to believe that is really your position.

And it rather contradicts your own nom de Web: a “Skeptic” who apparently is not skeptical.

Further, what you propose is a formal logical fallacy.

In making an argument, the burden of proof is always on the person making the claim.

And so when someone offers a quotation, and in particular where they are clearly appealing to authority, they have an affirmative obligation to get the facts right.

  6. Thank you, Steve.

But I seriously doubt that a lot of people never even realize when you have handed them their ass.

  7. Carolyn’s long-term OVERIDING political flaw is being unable to think for herself.

  8. Try looking at other sources that it is not a Lincoln quote.

    Wikipedia, for example, or Snopes.

When I was in the Illinois House, I had the Legislative Research Unit looking into the quote and the researcher came to the same conclusion.

  9. She’s the drama queen, poster-brat and puppet-pet of the vile IEA.

    That, alone, disqualifies her IMHO.

    VOTERS BEWARE: She is T O X I C

  10. We have a Vice President who plagerizes. . .

This can only help her chances.

  11. Well I blame her more for putting up a Conservative quote ~to lead people to believe she feels this way,~ than I do getting ‘who said it’ wrong.

Her voting record gives her away whether she was right about who said it or not.

  12. That’s such a really excellent quote, I’m sure Lincoln wishes he would have said it…
