A press release from GOP State Rep. candidate Allen Skillicorn:

Skillicorn Opposes IL Gas And Mileage Tax Hikes

Electric cars would help pay for roads under Senate Bills 3267 and 3279.

Illinois Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) proposes Automotive Mileage Tax (SB 3267) and Illinois Senator Heather Steans (D-Chicago) proposes 30 Cent Per Gallon Tax Hike (SB 3279), which would give Illinois the dishonor of the highest gas tax in the nation.

“When I look at Springfield, there are no solutions; only talk of higher taxes or threats of slashing services.

“Instead of always demanding more money from families, we should be finding ways to spend funds more efficiently and reform the burdensome bureaucracy smothering growth.”

Skillicorn continued, “Rather than passing the structural reforms that will solve our budget impasse, bring down the cost of providing services and boost the economy, Speaker Madigan and my Democrat opponent want to hike taxes yet again to create an enormous new government bureaucracy to track, monitor and charge us for every mile we drive.

“If enacted, this new mileage tax would be yet another crushing burden on working families, single mothers commuting to work, and other motorists.

“Every Illinois driver would be fitted with a GPS tracking device like an Orwellian novel.

“These two new tax hike proposals are an outrageous over-reach, it’s shameful!”

  1. The Cullerton/Madigan/Democrat connection – driving more businesses and families out of Illinois and crushing the middle class … one tax at a time.

  2. Are they crazy?

No one will be left in Illinois after this one!

Thank goodness we will have you there Allen to protect the taxpayers, hopefully we can survive til then!

  3. So as I read this Allen is against the tracking devises, that I can see needs more consideration.

The MFT user fee has been under funded for years, it could cover maintenance and resurfacing, but not expansion of the system.

Instead property taxes have been used which is wrong.

MFT needs to be raised and propane, electric and other vehicles need to fork out more because their tires are still part of wearing out the pavement.

So Allen what is your alternative plan/proposal?

  4. even wanting to charge us on our way out of this sorry so called state!!!

it will be a good day when I am able to leave

    sad sad sad !

  5. The usual reaction to declining tax revenues, due to the recent oil price decline.

Remember Illinois is one of the few states that gouges consumers, with it’s pile on sales tax at the pump.

As with the artificial run up of home prices and the windfall of taxes Assessors happily stole for years from homeowners.

I wonder what happened to the windfall of Sales Tax Revenue at the pump when gas was $4 a gallon?

  6. Illinois could stretch its fuel tax dollars a whole lot farther if the General Assembly would repeal the prevailing wage laws and pass right to work laws.

Even the people who hold the stop/slow signs on road construction sites get paid as union laborers.

The last time I checked, they make about $65/hr counting benefits and they have ridiculous rules for overtime pay as well.

I’m all for people making as much as they can, but not if they are living on the taxpayers’ dime.

  7. Yeah, Honest. It’s always a joke when they get caught.

    Gee, we weren’t even serious.

    Yeah, right.

And Nob, you can’t be serious that you think tracking anybody anytime with anything could be any kind of a solution to anything – EVER!

  8. Thank you Honest Abe, I don’t think I was the only one to fall for this democratic ploy though!

  9. That was a trial balloon, not a hoax.

He walked it back when it got a far worse reception than he thought it would.

  10. Cindy did I say I wanted people tracked?

    Nope

I would consider some type of user fee on electric and propane so green vehicles pay their fair share.

Maybe a separate billing for the machines that supply the electric or propane vehicles with some taxes for MFT.

We need to get roads off property taxes.

  11. Currently a significant portion of our MFT revenue goes to other pet projects.

Rep. Mike Fortner has a constitution amendment to prevent diversion of these funds.

As long as a posion pill is not added to this, I would happily co-sponsor the amendment.

Currently such a small percentage of alternate fuels are being used, that I would wait before adding them into the MFT equation.

Even my wife’s Prius uses gasoline, so she pays into MFT.

Also consider the light weight and small size.

I won’t even bring up my motorcycles in the debate.

  12. Not that I matter at all, but I would definitely leave Illinois if this passes.

Enough is enough out of Springfield.

    Pensacola, will be my home.

  13. Yes Allen about the diverted MFT funding, that shouldnt be as is.

Weight matters of course to road damage and your Prius if part elec is not paying far share.

Mft rate was probably based on fuel usage of less than 15mpg which also is a problem.

    So what is your plan?

  14. IL is one of only seven states that doubles the Federal MFT.

There’s more than enough revenue, a higher percentage needs to stay in the road fund.
