Northwest Herald Looking Like a Shopper

The first time I saw a wrap around ad in the Northwest Herald, I have to admit is surprised me.

An ad before the front page?

Today, the Sunday NWH has an ad from American Mattress on page 1. page 2, the back cover and the inside of the back cover.

Front page of this Sunday's Northwest Herald.

Front page of this Sunday’s Northwest Herald.

In the 1960’s Shoppers Service was published out of Harvard.

A copy came to the McHenry County Treasurer’s Office, plus every household around Harvard.

Every week there were going-out-of-business ad for dairy farms in McHenry County.

Four years of that I observed.

At some point Shaw Newspapers bought the shopper.

I don’t know if it still exists, but economics seems to be forcing the local paper of record in the direction of recreating it.

  1. I do believe that with the new-fangled indoor plumbing, the Northwest Herald has lost some of its usefulness.

  2. Ten years ago McHenry County did not have a daily newspaper fit to wrap garbage in.

    Now we do!

    Thank you, Northwest Herald!
