A poll by Victory Phones reported on Capitol Fax clearly shows why Democrat Jack Franks is dissociating himself from the leader he has helped elected House Speaker nine times:
Q. What is your opinion of Mike Madigan?
- Favorable 13.2%
- Unfavorable 71.1%
- No opinion 15.6%
That’s up from 52% unfavorable in 2010.
So maybe that is why Franks told every reporter except the one in the room when he announced he was not running for re-election, but, instead would seek the McHenry County Board Chairmanship.
Until he officially drops out (see here for where his name will show up, if he, indeed, does decide not to run for both offices), he is officially running for both offices.
No matter that on Sunday, May 15th, Pete Gonigam reported,
“Franks qualified that saying he’d give up the Rep. race if the Committee can pick another candidate who’s both ‘electable’ and holds a political outlook consistent with his own.”
Maybe Gonigam caught Franks off-guard…before he honed the message he would later give all other reporters.
On a historical note, it appears that former GOP State Chairman Pat Brady was correct when he targeted Madigan as the bogyman in 2012.
