He and friends have recorded a new song appropriate to this year’s Chicago Cubs.

On most days, I’m leaning over a studio microphone with my script in hand, preparing for newscasts on STAR 105.5FM and 103.9 The Fox.

On August 19, I was again holding a microphone.

But nothing else came even remotely close to my usual work routine of gathering news and reading it on-air.

On this particular summer day, I wore my Chicago Cubs hat and a 1039 The Fox shirt and stood on the stage at Carpenter Park in Carpentersville for the town’s Rock

The Fox Music Fest. I joined the rock band Vertical Jam on stage because I was introducing in concert a new Cubs song.

I wrote the lyrics to Summer of Fulfillment in Cubbie Blue.The fantastic 2016 season inspired me to write a song from a fan’s perspective.

I recognized the long suffering and loyalty of Cubs fans.

I’ve been a fan since the early 1960s and have experienced the highs and lows of Cubs seasons for decades.

I also share in the superstitions of Cubs fans and that’s why in the chorus of Summer of Fulfillment in Cubbie Blue, I say, “You know what it is that’s overdue.”

I can’t quite state what we are hoping for because I am not going to jinx the team. I believe what millions of Cubs fans are seeking is a fulfillment of what success feels like.

The repeat successes of the Blackhawks and Bulls proved that victory is possible in Chicago, but maybe not for the Cubs.Now we are ready for Summer of Fulfillment in Cubbie Blue and I found an equally excited Cubs fan to write the music to the song.

John Ryan of Vertical Jam attended the same high school, Maine East in Park Ridge. 

We followed by about ten years another Maine East graduate, the legendary singer songwriter Steve Goodman.

He wrote and performed the Cubs anthem Go, Cubs, Go.

We’ve read comments from people saying they do not want to see any other song replacing Goodman’s classic tune.

John and I have stressed that we’re hoping the Chicago Cubs management can use our song during the playoffs and anything beyond in addition to all the traditional Cubs songs.

On the stage, I held the microphone and introduced Summer of Fulfillment in Cubbie Blue for the first time in concert.  I then stepped to the side of the stage behind a few big speakers and listened to Vertical Jam and lead singer Don Mills deliver on this rocking tune.

I looked around the side of one of the speakers and watched the crowd snapping pictures with their phones and some people were dancing.

The energy of the song came through the guitars and Mills’ voice, and I knew we had a hit song.

Right there I thought I had to do everything I could to bring this song to the public’s attention because very little time remains before the regular season is over.

Go, Cubs, Go, and Let’s Go Cubbies offer excellent songs.

I’m hoping Summer of Fulfillment in Cubbie Blue can be a kind of fan theme for the 2016 season.

“NOW,” screams the license plate of this McHenry County Cubs fan.

This is the fan’s dream to feel the fulfillment of success from their beloved Cubs.

The band finished with a flourish of musical notes and I walked down the steps from the stage and into the crowd.  They were applauding what they knew was a first.

They witnessed the first public performance of what I’m hoping will be a new Cubs song that honors the fans loyalty. People came up to me and told me how they enjoyed Summer of Fulfillment in Cubbie Blue.

For me, this was a rare moment.

One young lady in the 2012 Algonquin Founders’ Favorite contingent wore a tee shirt saying, “It’s gonna happen!”

For most of 40 plus years, I performed daily in front of one other person, the announcer.

I knew people were listening but I’d never receive such immediate feedback.

That night on August 19 brought immediate response and what I heard was encouraging to continue to pursue trying to see the song receive the exposure it truly deserves.
