Here’s what the Chicago Tribune was reporting and projecting for temperature last night:

9 degrees when I took this screen shot of the Chicago Tribune weather page.

9 degrees when I took this screen shot of the Chicago Tribune weather page for Crystal Lake.

And, this moning about nine our thermometer:

Crystal Lake's temperature abou 9 AM.

Crystal Lake’s temperature abou 9 AM.  Looks like 14 degrees.

The ice on Crystal Lake is probably thick enough to hold an ice boat now.

  1. Cal, your thermometer is in two degree increments – there’s ten lines for every twenty degrees.

Thus, four lines above ten wouldn’t be 14, it would either be 18 or -2.

Since the “0” is just to the left of the top of the red, the temperature on your gauge must have been -2.

  2. It’s still better than it was 10,000 years ago when there would have been 1,000 feet of ice above my property.
