Skillicorn Files Tax Limit Referendum Petitions in McHenry & Kane Counties

A press release from State Representative-elect Allen Skillicorn:

Current two-term East Dundee Village Trustee, known during the last Election as the ‘Tax-cutter’, State Representative-Elect Allen Skillicorn (66th IL State Rep. Dist.), filed a Petition for Submission of Public Question (For Tax Levy) on Tuesday, January 3th, 2017, in both Kane and McHenry Counties; to appear on the ballot April 4, 2017 Consolidated Election.

The petition for McHenry County reads as follows:

Petition for Submission of Public Question (For Tax Levy)

We, the undersigned, qualified voters in the County of KANE and State of Illinois, and residing at the places set opposite our respective names do hereby petition that the following question be placed upon the ballot at the April 4, 2017 Consolidated Election for approval by a majority of the electors of the County of KANE:

Shall each taxing body located partially or wholly within the limits of the County of KANE be required to seek voter approval by referendum prior to increasing its annual total property tax levy?”

“My goal as State Representative is to make it harder to hike property taxes on Illinois families.

“I representboth Kane and McHenry Counties, and my constituents pay some of the highest property taxes in the nation.

“Tuesday, January 3rd, we filed thousands of signatures from both Kane and McHenry County residents that want this referendum to freeze property taxes on the ballot for the April 4, 2017 municipal election.

Allen Skillicorn

“I expect special interests that prefer the status quo to oppose this effort.

“I want to make something perfectly clear: The interests that may oppose this referendum want to hike your taxes.

“Until we reform the way bureaucracy drives up costs, our property tax bills will continue going up every year, forcing working class families and seniors out of their homes.

“This is the first step to give that power back where it belongs…to the people. Voters deserve a chance to vote on freezing property taxes.”

The 66th IL House seat encompasses Fox River Valley from Crystal Lake to Elgin. Skillicorn lived in Crystal Lake as a small child, and grew up in Algonquin. He now lives in East Dundee with his wife, Heather, and their adopted Doberman, McFly.

Allen is currently serving his second term as an East Dundee Village Trustee where he successfully passed ‘Freeze The Levy’ in 2012, freezing taxation to 2011 levels, and lowering the tax burden on East Dundee residents.

Skillicorn is currently Vice Chairman of the Kane County Republicans and Chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus of Illinois. Prior to that, he was Vice Chairman of the Kane County Young Republicans.

  1. Nice job Allen.

Has the other state reps and senators from this area signed on to this process or are they mostly part of the over taxation problem?

McSweeney and McConchie what are your positions on this effort?

  2. Allen, thank you for taking a step in the right direction, but what about pushing for a Property Tax Cap of 2.5% as Massachusetts did with Proposition 2 1/2?

I understand that is well over the national average, but is a fair taxation vs. the overreaching burden of 4-5% that we see today. This would help families tremendously!

  3. Property tax rate cap is the only hope for Illinois homeowners.

    Please follow through.

There are people ready to assist your effort, and ample data to support the desperate necessity of such a cap.

  4. As a practical matter, I’m not sure the timing of the State’s election cycle matches up sufficiently to allow voters to consider each taxing body’s levy request every single year.
