Advisory Referendums Killed

Two advisory referendums that McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks announced he wanted on the ballot in April were voted down by a vote of 17-7.

They would ask about

  • prohibiting increases in tax levies without a vote of its constituents
  • cutting the size of the County Board from 24 to 12 members to be elected from single member districts

A third referendum asking whether voters want to eliminate the elected office of Recorder of Deeds.

Franks withdrew the Recorder of Deeds proposal before the agenda was distributed and asked that the referendum to cut the size of the County Board be removed at the beginning of the Tuesday meeting.

None of the referendums had been considered in a committee.

Both Franks and Board Republicans accused the other of playing politics.

Tax limit referendums, also advisory, passed with over 90% of the vote in Lakewood, Cary and Fox River Grove.

  1. Hats off to the 17.

Now put it in committee and do it right.

The last thing this county needs is a liberal dictator.

  2. Who needs an advisory referendum?

    The residents?

We already know property taxes are high – thanks to schools, public sector unions, prevailing wage laws and unsustainable public pension systems.

    The politicians?

They must be really stupid if they have not picked up on overall public sentiment!

  3. 1) The one about the advisory to cut county board size was already on the last referendum! NO REPEAT NECESSARY!

    2) Townships have already got petitions saying our taxes are too high. NO NON-BINDING REFERENDUM NECESSARY!!

    Referendums on ballots cost money!

QUIT $PENDING TAXPAYER MONEY, ON NEEDLESS MAKING IT LOOK LIKE YOU”RE DOING SOMETHING, MR FRANKS!!!!

QUIT THE THEATRICS, AND GET BUSY ON MAKING A DIFFERENCE, FRANKS!

The majority of the board members said “make it binding and we’ll vote for it, otherwise this is just fluff” AND THEY’RE RIGHT!!!!

  4. And another thing, you’re also wasting money on 2-3 assistants tripping the costs to the county of having a Chairman!!!

Tell your boy and girl wonder to stop walking the room looking over citizens’ shoulders.

You are a very slick yet sleazy lot!

DO YOUR JOB and the taxpayers won’t need to pay 3 people plus legal counsel to do it for you!

    You’re a disgrace, Franks!

  5. Move on get the bill already passed in the state house through the state Senate.

Pam, Dan, and now floor leader Karen should be all over a quick passage.
