Advertising on McHenry County Blog — 43 Comments

  1. The McHenry County blog is read by a ‘legion’ of no more than 280 people.

Candidates, you are better of educating your voters door to door than giving a cent to Cal.

If you are a local GOP candidate, consider that anyone who reads this blog and believes it as gospel is already a staunch GOP voter and you have their vote; your money would be better spent persuading other voters.

Cal’s readership is predominantly Cary and CL readers, so western McHenry County candidates need not apply if you were considering.

Cal also has no way to prove that his advertising leads to considerable voter turnout.

There are no metrics to tack social media presence like with Facebook ads.

  2. Also, do you want your campaign associated with a disgraced politician?

  3. An added advantage of this blog is that articles and topics can be found on search engines.

People not viewing this site will be linked to its articles through a search.

Freedom of the Press is CRUCIAL to freedoms in general.

I commend Cal Skinner for his efforts to promote civil discourse and educate voters.

No person is perfect, but we can all try to do better.

I LOVE the quote from the last great president, JFK. “Ask not what the country can do for you, but ask what you can do for our country.”

What are you doing for this country is the question we all need to ask ourselves.

    Have a great week everyone!

  4. Readership increases considerably as elections approach.

It may be people using search engines to find information about candidates.

  5. @Moderate

I hope you are not relying on sites like Alexa to come up with your 280 readers figure.

Such sites are notoriously inaccurate in the best of circumstances, and they do an even worse job with smaller websites.

The only way that you could get reasonably accurate data is if Cal shared his logs with you.

  6. @Cal – What do you define “readership” as? Unique visitors or simply page-views? Of course your page views increase as elections draw near because your readers are staunch conservatives or members of the McHenry County GOP, OR like Lake County Resident Fierabras, even go as far as to make a hitblog in an effort to drum up controversy.

@Billy Bob – I used more than 6 aggregators beyond Alexa and factored in averages; 280 was a VERY generous number. Understand that Alexa is only as powerful as the popularity of a website, so if the blog were as tremendously popular as people claim it is, the data would be unreliable. The counter positive to that notion is that you questioning the validity of the data as unreliable directly corresponds to Cal’s blog being unpopular and a waste of money for campaigns to invest in.

I have also done my own research into clicks per article and found that, on average, the blog gets between 40-120 clicks per post. This is heavily dependent on how many people comment.

  7. Thank you, Cal Skinner.

McHenry County is greatly underserved as far as credible new media is concerned.

I not that you do have a Rep. political position, YET, you do print and allow people you do not support to have representation on your blog.

All they have to do is give it to you or ask.

They can send their commentary to you and you oblige.

  8. Moderate, The traffic estimators do OK at showing trends, but they aren’t very good at estimating actual numbers.

It’s also extremely unlikely that averaging seven crappy estimates will magically yield a good one.

  9. Cal Skinner’s blog is like Bill Cosby.
Many people said that Bill Cosby was a rapist. Many traffic estimators put Cal’s unique readers at about 280.
There’s probably some truth to Bill Cosby being a rapist and Cal Skinner’s blog probably having a piddly amount of people reading.
But we won’t find out because both Bill Cosby and Cal Skinner are silent on the issue.

  10. If someone is claiming a public figure of wrongdoing, an actual name to reference the claim is the only legitimate manner to address the issue.

One thing I like about newspapers is that letters to the editor require an actual name and address.

On this blog, anyone can hide behind an anonymous handle and hurl insults and incriminations without any responsibility for the content.

I love freedom of speech, but I also like it when people put their real names to their comments or else they are just idle comments, in my opinion.

  11. If you believe what you are saying, you are truly wasting your time.

  12. Am I?

Do you provide proof to your advertisers on readership and independent/unique visitors daily or weekly?

  13. Rest assured that if Moderate is posting the blog is effective.

Moderate’s very presence validates the effectiveness of the blog.

Moderate’s objective is to promote Jack Franks.

Moderate is the biggest Jack Franks supporter on the blog.

Since the blog contains critical articles of Jack Franks, Moderate attempts to discredit the blog.

  14. Still crickets from Cal Skinner…

Cal, do you provide proof to your advertisers on readership and independent/unique visitors daily or weekly?

Legitimate media outlets and social media companies do or are able to quantify their impact. Can you?

  15. Last time I checked, Cal Skinner doesn’t answer to Moderate.

Moderate doesn’t like big bad Cal Skinner because Moderate is no moderate but a Liberal troll.

Go worship your white haired Elvis wannabe God that is Jack Franks, moderate!

    Oh what’s that?

    He doesn’t return your calls…

    I love this blog.

It has everything our liberal loser rag of a local paper won’t print.

Cal, please keep this service to the public.

  16. I can’t silence Cal.

I can question the effectiveness of his ads based on readership. His readership is minuscule – TINY.

I literally will never post here again if his unique visitors was anywhere around 4,000 – or 1% the total viewership of the NW Herald.

Furthermore, I WELCOME Cal instituting a policy where only verified, real names of users could post.

    PLEASE do that!

PLEASE make me and everyone else use their real name.

  17. Moderate aka #281, Post on the NWHerald if you need to know “real” names.

  18. Moderate is the very evil Rosa K. And she is so stupidly transparent in the way she tries to take Cal down that it is an embarrassment to any normal thinking human entity. Stupid never knows that they are stupid.

  19. Moderate posting has a direct correlation with how much crap Franks finds himself in.
So, it is apparent to me that Mr. Franks is in deep trouble.
Thanks Moderate for letting us know.

  20. CP,
I havent posted in about a week since a dive into available analytics on the McHenryCointyBlog. I posted because Cal was trying to garner advertisers.

He then deleted the post from the main page after I brought up how low the readership is.

Cal also won’t answer a simple question: can you or do you provide analytics to prospective advertisers?

Now he’s blocking my comments. Lol

  24. Sorry Cal,
Didn’t realize you were being DDoSed.

Still, can you answer if you give information to potential advertisers of your readership?

  25. ? Do you want to advertise?

It’s clear you don’t get enough attention at home, you have to come on hear and post several idiotic rants per day.

Someone’s jealous of Cal or someone really wants attention from Cal.

  26. To Moderate,

I have an idea, if you want an answer from Mr. Skinner I suggest you email him and invite Cal to a cup of coffee or tea at Colonial restaurant in CL.

Meeting people in person over coffee and discussing ideas, suggestions and/or complaints is a time tested way to bridge communication gaps. This I know for sure.

Or maybe you can help Cal mop the floor of the food pantry Friday as he and so many other good folks do to support the less fortunate. Volunteering is a GREAT way to get to know your neighbor.

Hope you and Angel take my advice, it would be fun as well. Have a good day!

  27. Moderate, please do not let your doubts dictate your actions.
I’ve only known Cal since the 70’s when he would stop over to purchase sweet corn.

When I was known as the fool of the county for housing homeless veterans and ex-cons in low cost shelters around my ‘ranch’ in Woodstock, Cal was there to offer help.

To this day I have never known him to show prejudice or anger towards anyone.

He may not choose to debate you on this blog, but in a face to face ‘sit-down’ I am confident he would welcome your respectful questions. You will leave a better person after getting to know him.

    Respectfully, Gary

  28. Thank you Moderate, you made my day!

I hope Cal feels the same way.
