TMA Calls on Governor Rauner to Veto Job-Killing Minimum Wage Hike

SCHAUMBURG, IL – This afternoon, the Illinois House passed a bill hiking the Illinois minimum wage 82% by 2022, despite strong opposition by job creators throughout Illinois.

The following statement can be attributed to Dennis LaComb, Director of Government Relations for the Technology & Manufacturing Association (TMA).

“Once again Springfield put politics ahead of growing our stagnant economy. These politicians, many of whom have never created a job or signed the front of a paycheck, have further increased costs on Illinois manufacturers at a time when they are already subject to some of the highest taxes and regulatory costs in the country.

“These men and women are working tirelessly to bring back manufacturing, and at every turn Springfield politicians are doing their best to thwart their efforts.

“After Cook County recently passed similarly-detrimental mandates on county businesses, one-third of the municipalities in the county have opted out to date, despite protests from liberal groups and pressure from Cook County politicians.

“Why?

“Because they recognize that policies that increase the cost of doing business right now, while our economy lags that of neighboring communities, is a horrible idea.

“Jobs are the priority for the unemployed and underemployed, and mandating a one-size-fits-all minimum wage is not the way to encourage employers to expand or locate in Illinois.

“We urge Governor Rauner to veto this job-killing legislation and turn the focus to supporting our job creators so we can rebuild our manufacturing sector.”

About TMA: Eight small manufacturing companies who thought they could better themselves by associating with one another founded TMA in 1925. Through the years, members established programs and services to help their businesses grow and prosper, train their employees, and provide medical and retirement benefits. TMA has grown into an almost 1,000 member not-for-profit organization representing more than 30,000 employees of precision manufacturing and supplier companies throughout Illinois.

$15 Minimum Wage Bill Attacked — 25 Comments

  1. Quite a few people simply don’t produce enough to be worth $15/hour.

This bill, if it becomes law, will greatly expand the permanently unemployed underclass, which is one of the goals of the party of big government.

    More. Guaranteed. Votes.

  2. The same garbage coming from compassionate conservative talking points: “job-killing legislation”, “the job creators”, blah, blah, blah, blah…They never agree it is a good idea to pay workers more. If the economy is in a downturn, it is a horrible idea to increase the minimum wage. If the economy is booming, it is not idea to increase the minimum wage because it will slow down growth or stop it altogether. Once again, the owners of the means of production get very creative convincing workers they should be paid less than they are worth. 2018, please do not delay…tic, tock, tic, tock…

  3. The primary reason for raising the minimum wage has absolutely nothing to do with improving the lives of the poor.

It has to do with fattening the coffers of State and Federal government!

Out of every dollar increase, there is an immediate deduction for income tax, Social security and Medicare.

In the private sector when wages are increased, the employer raises prices and / or hires fewer employees.

In the public sector when wages are increased, the employers simply increase taxes / fees but now with public pressure being applied they too are hiring fewer employees.

Look at what has happened at McHenry County relative to employee numbers and more recently what happened at MCC with its ‘Counselors’.

I suggest Schools eliminate ESL courses to reduce our education costs.

  4. When the cost of an input rises, businesses tend to use less of it.

Why is this so difficult to understand?

Wages should be determined by the laws of supply and demand, not by some idiot politicians.

  5. Billy Bob? Because liberal fools like Angel don’t understand why they cannot “share the wealth”. They are communist and socialists that don’t have a lick of common sense. They are fommenting their own demise because they have no clue about history. That is why they are dubbed useful idiots. The head communists love them.

  6. I thought teaching English was a good thing to help immigrants integrate to the culture and society of the United States…go figure that one. Why not eliminate math, science, social studies, physical education, health, etc. to further reduce education costs? Bible courses will be spared from this…2018, please do not delay…tic, tock, tic, tock…

  7. See a teacher? Thank a teacher! tic, tock, tic, tock…

  8. The House passed Senate Bill 81 (SB 81) in the 100th General Assembly on Tuesday May 30, 2017.

The bill is now in the Senate.

  9. The DEMOCRAT party of Illinois will not stop it’s big government Socialist war
against families, businesses and the middle class until they burn the state to ashes.

If at all possible get out now while you still can, before Madigan and his corrupt
    cronies enact an exit tax.

  10. Our sunshine blog commenters and their illuminating thoughts and analysis continue to make us all proud…not really. How about a nonsense tax? This might be an opportunity for my fellow compassionate conservative brothers and sisters to balance the Illinois budget and pay for the social security fund for the next 350 years. Just asking…2018, please do not delay…tic, tock, tic, tock

  11. The top compensated teacher in Maine Township High School District 207 (the district in which Mr. Llavona teaches) is scheduled to earn at least $161,571 this year.

Mr. Llavona was scheduled to earn at least $132,635 last year as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, in his 22nd year teaching.

An ESL teacher teaches kids how to speak English.

    +++++++

Maine Township is in Cook County.

McHenry County residents might think, if Maine Township wants to pay Cadillac teacher wages, it does not affect me.

    That’s pretty accurate.

However, the state pension contribution comes from state revenues.

High salaries result in higher pensions.

So any taxpayer who pays money to the state, for instance, state income taxes, is funding Mr. Llavonas pension.

The TRS pension is less than 40% funded, which means it has only 40% of the money right now that it should have.

If he works a full career (35 years of service) and never gets another raise, his starting pension will be $132,635 x .75 = $99,476.

Thus his starting pension will likely be over $100,000.

If he’s in retirement for 20 years:

$100,000 x 20 years = $2 million dollars tax free (retirement income is not taxed in Illinois).

That’s actually too low, since in retirement the pension increases 3% annually (COLA).

Keep that in mind when you hear the state doesn’t properly fund education.

  12. To the millions of readers of this sunshine blog (not really, probably 6-7 at the most): Have you noticed how the conversation slowly turns away from the subject and degenerates into personal attacks when you dare to disagree with my compassionate conservative friends? You are right. In the parallel universe of compassionate christian conservatism there is no place for dissent. Labor unions are evil and big businesses are divine job creators to worship. We are still waiting for a plausible argument on why it is not a good idea to pay workers what they are worth instead of a starvation wage. Dozens and cities, counties, and states around the United States have already increased the minimum wage to $15/hour. And the fight for $15 continues to gain momentum…unless, of course, you navigate in the colossal parallel universe of nonsensical compassionate conservatism. 2018, are you here yet? tic, tock, tic, tock…

  13. Illinois is a huge net exporter of tax dollars to federal government.
(See recent Wallet hub study )

For every property tax dollar paid locally to a teacher at his tax bracket, $.40 goes to DC.

That is $.40 of a lot of dollars which are not available to trickle through local Illinois economy.

  14. I’m with Rickey. But can you imagine what the price of something simple like a hamburger will be with those wages!!!!

  15. Just imagine the price of prescription drugs. Of course they pay workers $1500/hour, or perhaps $15000/hour. Or not? 2018, please do not delay…tic, tock, tic, tock…

  16. Angel? You are a typical doofus of a teacher. At that rate you missed the point entirely. Your RX instead of $600.00 would be priced at $6,000,000,000. You simply cannot follow any logical conclusion, can you?

  17. Raise this starvation minimum wage now. Fight for $15! Tic, tock, tic, tock…

  18. Senate Bill 81 (SB 81) in the 100th General Assembly has passed both the House and the Senate.

No indication that it has been sent to the Governor.
