Brettman Urges Voters to Contact Governor and Urge a Veto of House Bill 171

DDistrict 6 McHenry County Board candidate Orv Brettman sent out an email urging people to sign State Rep. Steve Reick’s petiton in favor of a veto of House Bill 171 two days ago.

HB 171, you may remember is one inspired by Democrat Jack Franks and designed to massively increase his power as McHenry County Board Chairman.

The text of the email is below:

Subject: Let the Governor hear from you please.

There is an end run around democracy under way in McHenry County and our State Rep. has stepped forward to help stop it.

He has written as follows:

A few years ago an attempt to increase the powers granted to the McHenry County Board Chairman failed by a 2:1 margin in a county-wide referendum.

Shortly after the defeat of that ballot initiative, voters approved a measure that would create a popularly-elected County Board Chairman with limited authority and power.

State Rep. Steve Reick’s plea for citizens to sign his petition.

That board structure is currently in place and is working well.

The General Assembly recently approved and sent Governor Rauner HB 171, a measure that would increase the power of the County Board Chairman in a few select Illinois counties, including McHenry County.

This would directly circumvent the expressed will of the people who resoundingly said “no” to a board leader with a great deal of individual power.

Please go to http://www.ilhousegop.org/reick_veto_hb171 and sign the petition to get the Governor to veto this vile piece of legislation today.

Thank you all,

Orville Brettman
McHenry County Board Candidate

  1. Even if Gov Rauner does not sign this bill, a Democratic governor, if elected next year as seems likely at the moment, will just go ahead an sign a new version passed by a new, and probably even more Democrat heavy, General Assembly.

Advise and consent of the Board is the only real safeguard.

You intrepid bloggers have until 5PM Monday to get your petitions filed to run for County Board.

  2. Re: “Even if Gov Rauner does not sign this bill, a Democratic governor, if elected next year as seems likely at the moment,”

Probably true if the R’s do not get some REAL Republicans as candidates.

So far the R’s have a few: Ives, Harold, Weber, Wilcox, Skillicorn and Griffin.

  3. Orv- When your were part of the League Of Justice did you wear a cape or more of a spandex guy? Given your portly dimensions I would assume spandex. Thanks
