Shannon Teresi Seeks Support in Campaign to Replace Pam Palmer as County Auditor

The top person in the McHenry County Auditor’s Office after the retirement of Pam Palmer on January 5th is Shannon Teresi.

Shannon Teresi

Palmer’s replacement will be appointed by McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks.

His only restriction is that the person must be of the same party as Palmer, that is, a Republican.

The Chairman has sixty days from the some date tied to Palmer’s resignation which her letter of December 7th said would take effect on January 5th.

The County Board accepted her resignation at its January 16th meeting.

Pick whichever date you want and the sixty-day deadline is approaching.

In a Jauary 12th Northwest Herald article  former Crystal Lake Grade School Board member Nancy Gonsiorek announced she was withdrawing from her third attempt to gain a seat on the County Board in order to apply for the Auditor post for the rest of the year.

In the article, she announced her intention to eliminate the elected office of Auditor (following Joe Tirio’s play book).  The strong impression was given that she had Board Chairman Jack Franks support in abolishing the independent office.

Five Republicans have applied for the interim appointment:

  • Nancy Gonsiorek, CPA – Crystal Lake
  • John Halbleib, consultant – McHenry, current Valley Hi Operating Board Member
  • Shannon Teresi, CPA – Crystal Lake
  • Kristin Weck Farrag, former bank manager – Marengo
  • James Young, Masters in Accounting – Crystal Lake

Inexplicably, the Republican Party has not made a recommendatin, although it did so for the lesser office of County Board member when Andrew Gasser resigned to become Algonquin Township Road Commissioner.

Teresi announced her candidacy for the fall election slot which will be determined by the McHenry County Republican Party.

Now Teresi is asking on her Facebook page for supporters to contact County Board members asking them to support her placement in the office until the winner of the November election is seated.

She writes,

“Please share my new flyer and let County Board members know you would like someone who is a

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and a
  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)

as your next McHenry County Auditor.

“County Board members will be voting on the temporary appointment to the role at the March 19th meeting.

“I have applied for the role.

“The Republican party and precinct committeemen will be voting to put a candidate on the ballot for the November election.

“Please make sure your voice is heard by sharing this flyer and contacting your McHenry County Board members and precinct committeemen.

“Feel free to contact me, if you have questions and want to know who best to contact.”

  1. Maybe Jack Franks will appoint whoever he wants and the GOP will go along with it like they did with his last county board appointment.

  2. Part of the genius of the founding fathers was the system of checks-and-balances. This basic system is violated when essentially administrative positions are filled by election.

For this reason, among others, I dislike elective administrative positions.

I make an exception for the auditor’s office.

The purpose of the auditor is to provide independent judgment and oversight at a professional level.

Nothing could be more important to the clean and efficient operation of government.

  3. Re: ” to contact County Board members asking them to support her placement in the office until the winner of the November election is seated.”

Are you referring to the next election for Auditor in 2020?

The Auditor’s office is not on the ballot this year.

“I make an exception for the auditor’s office. The purpose of the auditor is to provide independent judgment and oversight at a professional level. Nothing could be more important to the clean and efficient operation of government.”

Which is exactly why Jack Franks wants to make the appointment. 🙁

  5. Having met Shannon and had multiple in-depth discussions about BOTH the importance of a County Auditor (we cannot allow this watchdog position to be nixed by Franks!) AND Shannon’s extensive qualifications for the role, I back her candidacy 100%.

If you dreamt up *the* perfectly qualified candidate with the high ethical standards demanded of this position, it would be Shannon Teresi.

Not only is she passionate about doing the right thing, she is more than qualified to be entrusted as our Auditor.

If she isn’t appointed, it will be overtly suspicious.

  6. I suspect that you know where I was going with that, Cal.

Do you think he wants a watchdog or a lap dog in that position which he seems intent to do away with?

  7. Cal: Re: “It will be I believe. For a two-year term.”

Can you tell me what you are basing this on?

  8. What happened when Ruth Rooney resigned at a similar time in her term.

  9. I met Sharon …and I am voting for her… shes highly qualified and a nice person
