Bob Miller on Nepotism

Since most people think Algonquin Township Road Commissioner Bob Miller lost his re-election campaign because of the nepotism issue that opponent Andrew Gasser nursed for over a year, I thought some might be interested in what Miller said about the subject on his web site:

“Nepotism”

It’s no secret. Both Bob Miller’s sons-in law and his wife work for him at the Algonquin Township Road District.

“The thing is, my sons in law were both working for me before they ever started dating my daughters,” explained Miller.

“Both of them do a good job.

“What was I supposed to do, say, ‘Welcome to the family. You’re fired’?”

“My wife’s employment is a little more complicated,” said Miller.

“My old office manager needed some personal time off and Anna May said, ‘Oh, I can fill in for her.’

“Well then she needed some more time and then even more time.

“By the time she finally quit, Anna had been ‘filling in’ without pay for over a year and doing a better job, anyway.”

“I didn’t see any point in trying to reinvent the wheel, so I ‘hired’ her,” Miller said.

“The State’s Attorney’s Office said it was OK and the trustees said they didn’t have a problem with it.

“That was eighteen years ago, so if there’s some sort of conflict it’s a little late to bring it up.”

A photo of his wife in the office is included in this part of the web site.

Here is the palm card distributed during the summer after Gasser was elected Chairman of the Algonquin Township Republican Central Committee:

The back of the Algonquin Township Republican Party’s literature on nepotism.

This was followed by this campaign piece used against McHenry County Board Anna May Miller’s unsuccessful re-election campaign:

This side of the mailing talks about double dipping, long service and nepotism in the context of Anna May Miller’s employment.

Bob Miller on Nepotism — 17 Comments

  1. With that kind of logic, authorities should cease looking for criminals after eighteen years. Your child was murdered? I’m sorry. That was OVER eighteen years ago!!!!! No one cares. I hope he finds a better alibi for the great Judgement.

  2. “Bobby Miller on Nepotism”

–sounds like a book! Kinda like “Bobby Fischer on Chess”

Well, he’d be the expert, that’s for cert!

  3. He had permission from the trustees AND the SA office. Until you all can prove otherwise, I’d back off some; unless of course your job is to be a professional whiner, then by all means, trot along

  4. Will someone PLEASE tell Gasser to remove the obsolete RD Dist. signage from the Main Workshop!

I mean the big Red Sign by the entrance that says: “ALGONQUIN TOWNSHIP WAS BUILT ON NEPOTISM!”

… and the Grey Sign near Miller’s old Office should also go. It reads:

“WE PROMOTE FAMILY VALUES HERE ALMOST AS OFTEN AS WE PROMOTE MILLER FAMILY MEMBERS!”

  5. AZ supporter: Al Capone had ‘permission’ from other dons and the corrupt Cook Co. SA’s office too.

What difference does it make? Nepotism is wrong. And I do not buy the cover story that the sons in law aka ‘the loafsters’ started working for Booby Miller before they ever met his daughters.

I’ll back off when Miller backs off trying to justify the unjustifiable! TOI even warned against the practice in the 1990s and EVEN suggested arrangements be made with nearby townships to effect ‘transfers’ so it wouldn’t reek so bad!

  7. Miller would have a much more convincing argument if his wife’s pay weren’t so excessive.

  8. —and, ha, ha in Miller’s FB crying-jag, he neglects the fact that he HIMSELF was a nepotism hire when his Daddy misran the Road Dist!

How about this defense before sentencing in federal court, Oct. 2020:

“I came from a broken home where nepotism was a way o’ life, Judge. I didn’t know any better. Honest! When I was a little shaver growin’ up, Daddy done me “Son, the taxpayers are there to keep us in clover. Townships are better than any El Dorado because they’ll never go away. It’ll be your own piggy bank someday, son. And you’ll pass it on to your sons or sons-in-law. That’s how it all works. Remember my motto, boy.
“Don’t be a jerk and get real work! Be a Townshipper!”

  9. NOTE: just because you CAN, doesn’t mean you SHOULD!
Nepotism and Patronage are the Chicago and Springfield way. We hate it because there’s no doubt, it breeds corruption and kills accountability! Period.

Now just because hiring family is ‘legal’ does not mean all those other things we’re finding out about are ‘legal’. Another reason Nepotism should not be allowed is because it’s far too easy to conspire, over-pay, look the other way, etc etc. I think Millers saw opportunities and ran with them. Best advice for elected officials is, “If it has the appearance of impropriety, don’t do it”. The next few months should be very interesting.

  10. Never ending story township nepotism condom hires lesperance kid. What favor in return does rusty Mike do for condom hire his kid or friend eliminate the corruption

  11. That is the most embarrassing excuse of the day by BM AND HIS LAWYER DAUGHTER
    Very entertaining at best

  12. Well, he’s lying about one of his son-in-laws(who was a friend of mine), and I can make up a fake story about something the S.A.’s office allegedly “told me” two decades ago just as easily as any other township official.
