Beavers in Oakwood Hills

The Village of Oakwood Hills reports that beavers are in Silver Lakes

A recent PBS program reported on beavers reclaiming territory they occupied before trappers eliminated them.

An interesting part of the show was that the sound of running water seems to stimulate beavers to build their dams.

Here’s the message that the Village sent to residents:

“It has been brought to our attention that there has been another beaver sighting. We have been instructed the best way to prevent the beaver from chewing your trees is to wrap them with chicken wire.”

  1. They are industrious. Beavers will normally take tree up to 50′ away from water but if food is scarce they will move out 150′ or more. Beavers have a definite preference for the trees they like to eat. Preferred tree species include alder, aspen, apple, birch, cherry, cottonwood, poplar and willow. Aspen/poplar and cottonwood are their favorite. If the supply of their preferred trees is low they will harvest oaks and some maples.

  2. Beavers show up when the “land” is going to be turned back into fertile farmland. It’s what they do. Your trees are the least of your problems. Say goodbye to your lake. It will soon be filled in by the industrious miracle workers.

  5. Its amazing how any post, any subject, even a lighthearted nature post becomes a chance to bash DEMOCRATS. You’d never know that the county has been run almost exclusively by Republicans for a century.

  6. Next year I got to get a Beaver Dam tip-up. They are the best for Ice Fishing. Good reminder. Lol
