Senator Karen McConnaughay Withdrawing from Re-Election Race

Karen McConnaughay

State Senator Karen McConnaughay has decided not to run for re-election this fall.

She sent the following email to Senate Minority Leader Bill Brady:

“The purpose of this letter is to inform you that I have decided to not seek re-election this fall and will instead be pursuing other opportunities.

“Rest assured that as long as I remain a State Senator I will be doing my utmost to represent the taxpayers of the 33rd District and the State of Illinois—including continuing the work we’ve started in reforming this state’s ethics regulations.”

That leaves Republican Party leaders in Kane and McHenry County to select a replacement.

Nancy Zettler

Allen Skillicorn

State Reps. Steve Andersson and Allen Skillicorn are the House members in McConnaughay’s senate district.

Andersson did not run for re-election.

Whoever is picked will face Democrat Nancy Zettler.

She was defeated for State Representative when she ran against Skilicorn in 2016.

Nancy Zettler lost to Allen Skillicorn for State Representative two years ago.

If Skillicorn is chosen, then a replacement will be needed for Skillicorn’s seat.

Skillicorn defeated McHenry County Board member Carolyn Schofield, Dan Wilbrandt and Paul Serwatka (who withdrew from the race, but remained on the ballot).

2016 primary election results for both Republicans and Democrats. Paul Serwatka is not included because he withdrew before the election.

Schofield is on the ballot for County Board this year.

  1. I think Schofield is much better suited for downstate, than our county board.

  2. Skillicorn stepping up and Serwatka in the 66th would give a glimmer of hope to an otherwise hopeless state.

  3. Is it true that Republicans only have 19 days to find a replacement for Karen the Quitter?
    :O

  4. I’m extremely glad that she’s leaving, but she really should have decided upon her future plans before the primary election.

  5. Sunshine blogger, you have no more excuses to remain on the sidelines…jump right ahead and return to Springfield! Tic, tock, tic, tock, tic, tock…

  6. I was surprised that she announced this, can’t wait to see what other opportunities she is looking at !

I will also agree with Lima Beans, Allen Skillicorn stepping up and Paul Serwatka throwing in his hat for a
    Grand Slam.

  7. @Murmuring Schofield is much better suited City Counsel than any other positions!!

  8. Off a lot of credit being given to Schofield here…

Schofield’s talents would be best served as member of a PTA or kids soccer club.

Anything more than that, I’d have to heartily disagree with.

  9. Keep Skillicorn where he is, he’s doin’ great.

    Appoint Serwatka!

  10. I agree with Satan! Please join me in this holy crusade to ban women from sunshine blogs. Keep this fight going as we move forward into the 21st century…tic, tock, tic, tock, tic, tock, meeeeeoooooowwwwwwwww…

  11. Cindy could have been a major character in the novel, Hand Maids Tale”.

  12. Serwatka is not a Republican.

He can’t go for that if he wanted to.

  13. Puleez pick Skilcorny, he is so out of his depth now, imagine the entertainment of a promotion.

    #2thumbsup

  14. Okay, okay, you’re right Lima, and herewego. Park district? PTA… at a school in Rockford. Ahhh Dog Catcher, that’s the one. Anywhere but the county board again.

  15. Will the nominee need to file at least 1,000 petition signatures?

If so, when is the deadline?

In the 3rd comment, above, All American said that the deadline is June 25.

  16. Lima, he started his own party. Serwatka left the Republican party, did he not?

  17. She says: “Rest assured that as long as I remain a State Senator I will be doing my utmost to represent the taxpayers of the 33rd District and the State of Illinois—including continuing the work we’ve started in reforming this state’s ethics regulations.”

She didn’t do her utmost before, why are we to think she won’t be a lame duck.

That ERA bill is despicable that she voted on.

That Bill that she wrote JUST FOR JACK FRANKS to have more power on the McH. Co Board was also despicable.

She said she wasn’t going to seek re-election, then changed her mind.

And changed her mind AGAIN leaving her party in the lurch, We should’ve been searching eversince her first announcement!

    Not to be trusted.

How do we know this wasn’t orchestrated to let her seat go to a Dem.
