Roskam on Trump Meeting with Putin

A press release from Congressman Peter Roskam:

Roskam condemns failure to confront Russian election interference, hostility towards U.S. allies

Washington, D.C. – Representative Peter Roskam (R-IL) released this statement following the press conference held by President Trump and Vladamir Putin:

Peter Roskam

Russia’s interference with our democratic process is appalling and undeniable.

The President has a responsibility to not only confront Vladimir Putin for attacking our democracy, but to use all tools available to prevent future acts of aggression that could undermine the cornerstone of our republic – free and fair elections.

Vladimir Putin is not our ally – he is a brutal dictator who has undermined our democratic institutions; invaded and continues to illegally occupy the territory of our allies Ukraine and Georgia; and continues to support the massacre of hundreds of thousands in Syria.

We must maintain a united front with our partners around the world to confront Russian aggression.

Today’s press conference was an affront to American democracy and the Intelligence Community and a victory for Russian propaganda.

The President has a duty to hold Vladimir Putin to account.

  • Rep. Roskam considers Putin’s regime as a major threat to U.S. national security and international stability that must be confronted on all levels.
  • Rep. Roskam stands with the U.S. intelligence community’s findings that Russia actively interfered with the 2016 elections and strongly supports Special Counsel Mueller’s ongoing investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
  • Rep. Roskam supported sanctions against Russian entities responsible for interfering in our elections and condemned Russia’s role in the nerve agent attack against Sergei and Yulia Skripal on British territory.
  • Rep. Roskam released a statement of support for the anti-Kremlim protests across the Russian Federation.
  • Earlier this year, Congress provided $380 million in funding to boost our election infrastructure and $300 million to combat Russian cyberattacks. Rep. Roskam is also leading a resolution condemning Russia’s interference in European elections and calling for robust sanctions against these bad actors.

Roskam on Trump Meeting with Putin — 51 Comments

  1. Glad he understands. Hultgren’s response wasn’t nearly as strong.

  2. Oh, my goodness. Didn’t anyone hear? It was a no such animal. They covered it. Over and over again. This man is an idiot if he still believes the “Russian collusion” story. US intelligence are the people making this junk up! Hillary paid for it. Putin even got in a jab at Hillary. Doesn’t anyone listen to the live broadcasts? Why doesn’t Mr. Roskam go about fixing our rigged election machines? Why doesn’t he secure our elections instead of following fake lamestream stories? Mr. Roskam is an affront to my intelligence!

  3. Hah agree with Cindy! Who is Roskam trying to appease? Whatever, Trump DID confront Putin, but with no confession where would we be to continue to accuse without any proof that he or his administration were part of it?!? Trump handled it well.
Where are all the Democrats protesting Obama for saying Russians meddling didn’t happen ( when he was certain it would help Hitlery win?) LOL 😆

  4. DC has no intention of giving control back to the people.
Trump is a threat to the status quo.
DC is all about family dynasty building on the backs of the taxpayers.
The definition of a family dynasty is a political family who gives their daughter a $3 million wedding before she moves into her $10 million house.

  5. This press conference was an absolute disgrace. Trump won’t even side with America.

What Trump did today was commit treason. He cannot be supported anymore. He is a clear & present danger to America. Republicans can no longer be quiet.

Republicans, speak out. Now. This can’t be tolerated.

You saw a man today both ill-equipped to be President, and a man clearly not loyal to this country’s best interests.

    Gang, this is a crisis.

Americans of all political stripes must speak out against him.

It’s no longer about what Trump does. It’s about what WE do.

This is the time to speak out. This is the time for choosing.

    America is in danger.

Choose country over party. Choose country over policy.

    – (These were all quotes by) Joe Walsh (@WalshFreedom) – and for once I agree with him. You people still supporting DJT are brainwashed. You are very clearly choosing PARTY over your COUNTRY and history will remember.

  6. CCAPCOA you must be a special kind of nitwit to believe the hogwash you just typed. LMAO if you actually believe the outright lies you are proffering. I am dumbfounded by how stupid you are!

  7. There are exactly two possible explanations for the shameful performance the world witnessed on Monday, from a serving American president.

Either Donald Trump is flat-out an agent of Russian interests—maybe witting, maybe unwitting, from fear of blackmail, in hope of future deals, out of manly respect for Vladimir Putin, out of gratitude for Russia’s help during the election, out of pathetic inability to see beyond his 306 electoral votes. Whatever the exact mixture of motives might be, it doesn’t really matter.

Or he is so profoundly ignorant, insecure, and narcissistic that he did not realize that, at every step, he was advancing the line that Putin hoped he would advance, and the line that the American intelligence, defense, and law-enforcement agencies most dreaded.

Conscious tool. Useful idiot. Those are the choices, though both are possibly true, so that the main question is the proportions.

Whatever the balance of motivations, what mattered was that Trump’s answers were indistinguishable from Putin’s, starting with the fundamental claim that Putin’s assurances about interference in U.S. democracy (“He was incredibly strong and confident in his denial”) deserved belief over those of his own Department of Justice (“I think the probe is a disaster for our country”).

I am old enough to remember Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon telling lies on TV, about Vietnam in both cases, and Watergate for Nixon. I remember the travails and deceptions of Bill Clinton, and of George W. Bush in the buildup to the disastrous Iraq War.

But never before have I seen an American president consistently, repeatedly, publicly, and shockingly advance the interests of another country over those of his own government and people.

Trump manifestly cannot help himself. This is who he is.

Those who could do something are the 51 Republican senators and 236 Republican representatives who have the power to hold hearings, issue subpoenas, pass resolutions of censure, guarantee the integrity of Robert Mueller’s investigation, condemn the past Russian election interference, shore up protections against the next assault, and in general defend their country rather than the damaged and defective man who is now its president.

For 18 months, members of this party have averted their eyes from Trump, rather than disturb the Trump elements among their constituency or disrupt the party’s agenda on tax cuts and the Supreme Court. They already bear responsibility for what Trump has done to his office.

But with every hour that elapses after this shocking performance in Helsinki without Republicans doing anything, the more deeply they are stained by this dark moment in American leadership.

  8. OMG, delusional much? Get off your never Trumpin’ high horse! Everything Trump said was TRUE!

  9. Thanks for the laugh, “Bob Battaglia” and “Cindy”(who can never keep his/her gender straight in his/her posts):

Newt Gingrich thinks you’re full of shit. Paul Ryan thinks you’re full of shit. Mitt Romney thinks you’re full of shit. Jeff Flake thinks you’re full of shit. John McCain thinks you’re full of shit.

I am so looking forward to all of the Trump voters tearing each other apart like chimpanzees. Between prescription opioid abuse(which is killing off Trump voters at a much higher rate than the general population) and a tidy civil conflict between idiots who all voted for the same idiot- all very useful in Making America Great Again…

  10. More Trump hate from the twisted minds of the unhinged Left, like those who quote JAMES FALLOWS.
    Paranoid much ?

  11. What’s the difference between a Chick Pea and a Garbanzo Bean?
Trump never had a Garbanzo Bean on him!

  12. Putin’s goal was to divide the American people. It looks like he succeeded.

All major intelligence agencies, the US DOJ, two bipartisan congressional committees, a number of grand juries, several foreign governments, and Dan Coats, Trump’s own Director of Intelligence all say the Russian’s attacked our democracy. A Russian agent was arrested on Sunday for attempting to influence the NRA. Trey Gowdy, Paul Ryan, and many others agree. Is all of this “more Trump hate from the twisted minds of the unhinged Left?” I’m open minded and would really like to know. Evidence not insults please.

  13. Idiots still searching for that one outrageous Trumpism that will bring him down.

  14. This is the fight for your life. Do not be confused by the delusional realm chattering from the likes of CCAPOA, dentbla, Heinrich (new name for an old “friend”?), Joe Rosner, John Lovaas, Joe Rosner and such paid idiotic trolls. Thes “things” are your enemy. They will lie and scream like the demons they are when they get holy water sprinkled on them like Trump did yesterday with the help of Putin’s outing of Hillary. The Helsinki talks were the nail in their collective proverbial coffins. Expect screaming, but do not become weary of the fight for truth. Pieces of crap like Roskam are outing themselves by lining up with the enemy. To all the good people that recognize truth: be diligent and steadfast while watching all the weasels become completely unglued. Trump is definitely winning the peace and they cannot take it. New world order be damned.

  15. You can see here why Illinois is screwed.
Voters believing the vomit spewed by the career politicians whose only interest is wealth for themselves and their family.

  16. Putin dividing America? C’mon get real. This is nothing new. Russia, and the USSR in the past, had interfered with, or attempted to interfere, in elections and other matters of many nations. This has been going on for a very long time.

What has really divided America is:

Favoritism shown to Democrats, Obama, Hillary Clinton and bias against Trump and Republicans by the mostly left leaning media

Favoritism by top justice and investigative agencies toward Hillary Clinton

Bias AGAINST Donald Trump by top justice and investigative agencies

  17. Pot calling the kettle black regarding Putin and Russia interference.

The U.S. has interfered in other nations’ elections, most recently when agents of Barack Hussein Obama tried to influence an Israeli election to oust Netanyahoo. Read about the U.S. interfering in elections and assisting in coups over many decades per article:

“The long history of the U.S. interfering with elections elsewhere”

By Ishaan Tharoor, October 13, 2016

    Article states:

“Aside from its instigation of coups and alliances with right-wing juntas, Washington sought to more subtly influence elections in all corners of the world. And so did Moscow. Political scientist Dov Levin calculates that the “two powers intervened in 117 elections around the world from 1946 to 2000 — an average of once in every nine competitive elections.””

  18. Okay, so much for the insults. I’m looking for reliable information as a concerned citizen, what do you got?

BTW: Who is paying me? I want to send them to collections. I was hoping my two college degrees, my being recruited for West Point and my IQ testing in the 120s meant I was not an idiot. Having Cindy as assessing my intelligence as “idiotic” is sure is set back. I’m sure by “troll” she meant Army Veteran, disaster volunteer, multi-decade blood donor, and involved citizen. Not an anonymous online crackpot who reflexively uses insults instead of civil conversation, evidence, and persuasion.

  19. First off I am a conservative and I was not happy with what the President said yesterday! He did not stand up to the Dictator of one of the most powerful countries, at least militarily. However, if one thing I have learned watching Trump is this is not the end game. So I will take some time to see what becomes of it in the near future. President Obama never ever stood up to one foreign Dictator and that includes Putin! He let Putin take over parts of Ukraine! He told Putin he will be able to do more under his second term. He drew a line in the sand and backed down! He opened travel and international talks with Cuba/Castro! Hillary gave what 1/4 of Uranium to Putin! Is that not treason because she actually gave them something tangible! Though I am disappointed in Trump from yesterday I am happy he is telling NATO to pony up more resources. Our economy, though being in Illinois you don’t see it as much compared to other States, is doing so much better than the 8 yrs under Obama! And if everyone was so worried about threats than close the borders because that is a clear threat as well. And if Congress is so worried about threats than do something about it instead of lip service! Did Russia mettle in the election yes! Did it have a bearing on the outcome no! both have been proven. Was their collusion, which is a separate entity that people must understand, NO! Those are the 3 outcomes of Russia. Time to move on!

  20. Cindy you were once a realistic commenter, Now I’m not sure what came over you. Flip flopping? ??? Did someone make a cash deposit, or promise political enrichment? ??

  21. Excellent comments by anyanswers. If anyone is guilty of treason, it would be those in the Obama Administration who approved the Uranium One Deal (Extremely bad deal) whereby Putin’s Russian Company gets control of some of U.S. uranium.

Gross incompetence and stupidity by Obama when he caved to Putin’s demand that defensive missile sites not be put in Poland and the Checzk Republic. President Bush2 had set up agreements with these countries to put in the missile sites.

  22. It’s all BS.
Trump was the one who pointed out the Russia – Germany oil deal.
Don’t be taken in by this crap. The career politicians are pulling the wool over your eyes.

  23. Observation of a video of treasonous actions is not bias. You are definitely a Trumpster if you ignore the lies and what you can replay again on youtube if you really didn’t get it the first time bred winner.

  24. Faily McWorsethanCarter assured us that there was no Russian interference in the election two weeks before the election.

Are all you Liberals saying that Faily was just another lying……Democrat?

  25. On October 18, 2016, President Obama stated about election rigging:

“The larger point I want to emphasize here is that there is no serious person out there who would suggest somehow that you could even — you could even rig America’s elections, in part, because they are so decentralized and the numbers of votes involved. There is no evidence that that has happened in the past or that there are instances in which that will happen this time”.

  26. Rothschilds and Soros own the election machines in seventeen states (Illinois is one of those states). They are ALL rigged. Period. Been proven over and over. This is precisely why Hillary refuses to believe she lost. It was rigged for her to win! They are astounded that their “system” didn’t work out. How big a piece of crap do you have to be to lose a FIXED election? BTW bred, If Oblahblah said it, then count on it being a huge lie. (Just a rule of thumb to go by for future reference.)

  27. You can mettle in elections and have nothing to do with the voting machines. False things on facebook or other social media. How many times do networks, which are prominently left or left leaning national news outlets, run with false and completely lying breaking news and after the fact have to retract something. These things have cause and effect. Slowly widdles away at society of the facts. 2016 though backfired on Hillary! They have no one else to blame but themselves. But people on both sides of the isle tend to not look at facts. And when they do Republicans tend to hold their candidates more accountable where Democrats tend to circle the wagons more.

  28. For the enrichment of the dullards: I am sure anyan meant to say meddle and whittle while the Ai probably corrected their typing incorrectly.

  29. @anyanswers just like Herald,POSTING pics and bios of those arrested but not found guilty

  30. On December 16, 2016, President Obama said that Putin and the Russian interference in other nations’ elections and affairs is low key (under the radar?) and that public shaming of Putin would not work.

Where President Obama was grossly negligent was in NOT informing Americans in the autumn of 2016 that he and his intelligence agencies KNEW that the Russians were doing things on the internet to interfere in the presidential election process in the U.S. He should have gone on national tv a number of times warning Americans to be careful on social media and the internet and to not trust any website or posting of which they are not familiar with.

He should be brought in to a U.S. Congressional hearing to explain why he was derelict in NOT protecting the American election process.

  31. I thought Trump was alright. He didn’t do anything so wrong it would require this idiotic backlash and exploding heads! Trump 2020 .
He clarified what he meant today. Will that stop the hate? Geez, what a bunch of over reacting idiocy.

  32. **He should be brought in to a U.S. Congressional hearing to explain why he was derelict in NOT protecting the American election process.**

LOL – I’m sure you would have been fully supportive when the Obama administration came out a month or two before the election and said that Russia was attempting to interfere with the election in order to help Trump win.

    **eye roll**

  33. According to an article in, the Obama Administration was warned by U.S. national security officials in 2014 that Russia intended to interfere in the political process of the U.S. Obama and his inept administration totally failed to counter Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election campaign.

The title of the story is:

“Obama team was warned in 2014 about Russian interference

In 2014, the administration got a report of Russia’s intention to disrupt Western democracies, including the United States.”

  34. Who are you people siding with Trump, I mean Russia? Did you all see Trumps “apology” – the man has no soul and is only out for himself. He doesn’t have a belief system. He’ll say anything to get his base (you guys) riled up.

“Why wouldn’t it be Russia” is a cop-out. A lie and you guys don’t mind that our president flat out said “Why would it be Russia”, referring to political meddling. You all want to “drain the swamp”, as you cheer on our dissolving relationship with the free world, and champion strengthing relations with any autocratic leader in the East. Let’s align ourselves with the Russians and the Philippines, what a bright future our God-fearing nation we’ll have!

Out of all the people in the world – our president thinks it’s a good idea to get chummy with the Russians. The evil, bottom feeding, film-worthy antagonists of the world.

  35. As I remember correctly Romney said our biggest threat/foe is Russia but Obama/Dems said he was wrong! Obama thinks it’s ISIS but fails to do anything about it. Russia invades Crimea because of weakness shown by Obama. I did like one idiot on tv comparing Trumps meeting with Putin comparable to Pearl Harbor! LMAO! Obama has been wrong on so many things and lied as well!

  36. Just about everything you said, Ken is totally upside down backward. Trump is doing his damndest to save you and all you can do is holler. The man is under attack constantly and his life is in great danger, yet you think he is lying or stupid. You have no idea what you are talking about. That much is very clear from your rant. I am constantly amazed by fools who cannot even read comprehensively let alone read between the lines. If you were facing one nth the degree of what is really going on you would be pissing your pants continually. Who the Hell are you to side AGAINST YOUR President!!!!! The Russian government is the ONLY one that is dead set AGAINST the new world order (just like YOUR President) yet you want the see the end come as quickly as possible. Cut your own throat. Leave mine alone!

  37. A commenter at 1:35 PM today said:

“Who are you people siding with Trump, I mean Russia? Did you all see Trumps “apology” – the man has no soul and is only out for himself. He doesn’t have a belief system. He’ll say anything to get his base (you guys) riled up.”

So, Trump is “only out for himself”. Really, really, really? Trump did not need this job as president. He was a highly successful real estate developer and incredibly rich. He could have continued on with his real estate development work and/or retired to play golf daily in Florida or elsewhere.

But No. He loved his Nation greatly and saw the incredibly inept actions and decisions by Obama and previous presidents and wanted to do something about it. He campaigned in the primaries and came out victorious and then ran against the corrupt thug Hillary and won fair and square the presidency.

  38. bred? They are never gone get that. That Trump was even nominated was a true miracle. He fought all the deep state shenanigans and still WON! Second miracle. He is still alive! Miracles three through twenty-two. He is straightening things out that have been in deep do do for decades. But, the snowflakes and twinkies that are selfish and brain dead will NEVER get it. They don’t have a clue what is really going on. They WANT the demise of us all.

  39. Yup, it’s totally cool our President cozies up to a murderous dictator who shot down a plane with almost 300 people on it 4 years ago. And doesn’t even bring up the poisoning of British citizens at all. Ronald Reagan would be so ashamed of what the Republican Party has become.

  40. It’s not about Russia. The Dems are fine with Russia/ Germany. It’s not about the election as the Dems insist on unsecured voting and fight against voter ID.
The scum in DC are petrified Russia or someone else will release all their treasonous emails that sell out our country every day.
Trump is the second threat to their status quo and they are doing everything they can to stop him.
We interfere with governments every day. We assisted in the removal of Ghadaffi and left a void that killed hundreds of thousands in the aftermath.
Please understand that most of the politicians in DC are the scum of the earth.
Don’t be fooled with the Russia BS.

  41. My rant ain’t that bad Cindy. You ever retread your past comments? You all can have fun with your conspiracy theories, it’s ironic you can’t see the evil that in front of your eyes. ( cryptic biblical text )

  42. Ken? I didn’t say it was bad. You are putting words in my mouth.

  43. You pro Russians are of a certain breed….. perhaps evil? Pro east? Maybe just delusional.

Have. Fun with your new work order! I’d rather stick to aliens.

  44. 5 days a week isn’t enough.

Unions took away my grandchilds feed!

    What a world.

Cindy. How’s life in the kremlin? Oppressive and sad?
