Letter Writer Praises McHenry Township Road Commissioner Jim Condon’s Reputation, But Still Voting to Consolidate Road District with McHenry Township

The following letter to the Northwest Herald is printed here with the permission of its writer, Thomas J. Popovich:

Highway district consolidation needed for property tax relief

I do not know McHenry Township Road Commissioner Jim Condon personally, but in my 50 years of living and working here in McHenry, I have had occasion to deal with him professionally.

I have always found Condon to be an intelligent, honest and ethical individual.

The upcoming vote on whether to consolidate the position of the McHenry Township road commissioner has nothing to do with Jim Condon personally., and it is not a referendum on him, his performance or his character.

He just happens to hold the position at the point in time that the referendum has finally made it to the ballot, to allow taxpayers to determine for themselves whether the position should be consolidated.

Personally, it my belief that the consolidation of governmental units is a step in the right direction toward reducing our ridiculous real estate bills here in McHenry County.

I pay well over $100,000 in real estate taxes every year.

And, yes, I certainly understand that the vast majority of my tax money toward schools and teachers’ pensions (a subject for another letter in the future), but every penny does indeed help, and maybe it will serve as an inspiration to other taxing bodies to try to reduce /conserve as well.

That is why, despite my high professional of Jim Condon, I am going to vote yes to consolidate the position of McHenry Township road commissioner.

  1. If the referendum is successful, what is to stop Condon from running for Supervisor and two of his cronies to run for Trustee?

Three votes on a Township gives total control to them.

Condon wins the Supervisor and has himself hired to oversee the Highway Dept. with a total salary package of about $150,000.

I do not understand why he is fighting the referendum – he can’t lose!

  2. Condon is the County’s official ‘Hot Head’…. Don’t cross his slimy path.

These township losers, like Bob Miller, feel entitled to rob us blind.

  3. Condon is an angry fellow.

The taxpayers have outed him and the nepotism involving his son working for McHenry Township.
