Skillicorn Glad to See Grant Awarded for Turtle Island Project

EAST DUNDEE – This week, the Illinois Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) program announced more than $28 million in grants for local park projects across the state.

One of the projects that was awarded grant funds is right here in the 66th House District at Turtle Island Park in Lake in the Hills.

State Representative Allen Skillicorn (R-East Dundee) said he was glad to see the project receive the 50 percent funding match given the positive impact it will have on the community.

“We are blessed to have an abundance of beautiful parks and open land in the 66th District, but I’m especially happy to see the project at Turtle Island receive this funding,” said Skillicorn.

“Through this expansion project, the park will not only become a more inviting place for families and fishing enthusiasts, but it will ensure everyone can enjoy it to the fullest with the addition of a handicapped-accessible fishing pier.”

Turtle Island Park, located on Woods Creek Lake, was awarded $277,700 for the expansion project.

The project focus is to improve the quality of the venue, which includes the handicapped-accessible fishing pier Skillicorn noted, as well as adding a picnic shelter that will be built using green infrastructure techniques.

In addition, native plants and a butterfly garden will be added to make the park even more welcoming.

The OSLAD program is administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) through a dedicated funding source and provides up to one-half of a projects funding to be combined with local matching funds.
