Mike Buehler Holds All Republicans as McHenry County Board ICE Cancellation Vote Defeated

In the biggest test so far of his ability to hold Republicans together since his assumption of office in December, McHenry County Board Chairman Mike Buehler presided over a 15-8 vote to defeat efforts by Democrats to close the ICE floor of the County Jail.

All eight Democrats votes to cancel the contract with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

All Republicans opposed canceling the contracts, except Mike Skala, who did not participate in the meeting.

Almost three hours of comments preceded the vote with fervent advocates on both sides of the question.

Interrupting the meeting after initial applause for a supporter of cancellation was requested not to be repeated were cancellation advocates snapping their fingers to indicate approval of commenters on their side.

The issue was well vetted by proponents and opponents of the proposal.

Here is the press release from McHenry County:

McHenry County Board Votes to Keep the ICE Contract

WOODSTOCK, Ill. – After over a year of discussion, the McHenry County Board voted down a resolution that would cancel McHenry County’s contract with the US Marshals/Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to house and transport federal detainees at its Tuesday evening meeting.

Since 2005, McHenry County has maintained a contract with the US Marshals/Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to house a number of federal detainees, the majority of which were for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Revenue from this contract would then be used to offset costs in the County’s jail. In 2015, the County Board approved a modified contract that p, but on a month-to-month basis. Calls to look into the County’s

In an eight to fifteen vote, the McHenry County Board voted against a resolution to cancel the contract with the US Marshals/Immigration and Customs Enforcement by November 1, 2021.

County Board Chairman Michael Buehler, R-Crystal Lake, commented,

“Tonight’s decision reaffirms our commitment to continue working in collaboration with our federal partners to ensure national security, border security, and public safety.”

“I support the board’s decision to keep this contract in place.

“Immigration is a federal issue, and any decision made by the McHenry County Board regarding its ICE contract does not amend federal immigration laws as they relate to the detention of non-citizens.

“Without a mandate handed down from the federal government, which has the authority to change laws of this nature, our role is to adhere to federal statutes.”

He also commented that, “County Board Rules were followed, and the public was given an ample opportunity to express their opinions. Board members heard the public comments and engaged in their own research to support tonight’s decision.

“I respect the process that led to today’s vote.”

Mike Buehler Holds All Republicans as McHenry County Board ICE Cancellation Vote Defeated — 28 Comments

  1. Oh good, so the 16 people and a dog holding signs at 31 and 62 dont dictate for the rest of us, the running of Government.

Its Blasphemous that Acosta still has a vote (on anything) and hasnt resigned.

Good Leadership on the ICE issue Mr Buehler.

  2. A lot of people reported failure of the portal to view the meeting.

It froze repeatedly until I gave up.

The courts stream live with no problems from a dozen courtrooms every day.

The county needs to fix this.

Last night’s meeting was not really open to the public unless you were able to get in live.

  3. County Board member Jindrich believes Illegals should just be allowed to enter the U.S. as they wish and then take up residency and this would allow for the end of the crisis at the border.

This is what happens when we elected really young and inexperienced county board members.

I value their energy and enthusiasm, but they could use factual reliable information.

There was an immigration advocate who spoke.

She said the ICE webpage was not correct in it’s numbers, instead, she claimed radical immigration groups information was more reliable.

    That’s how the night went.

The crowd was disrespectful, insulting, and confrontational.

They wore VIVA LA MEXICO Flags and T-shirts.

    They yelled and interrupted others.

They held up huge signs so no one could see the podium.

    They called Mike Buehler names.

One person would say there are zero criminals coming across the border and this thinking is racist, then they would say they cannot go home because they will be killed, raped or tortured?

    So which is it?

Unfortunately, I found the lack of civility exactly what we do not need in our country.

A complete lack of acknowledgment that actions equal consequences.

This group showed us a lack of respect for laws and our American rules and regulations.

Had I seen a group of people showing love and gratitude for our country like so many legal immigrants express I would have a different opinion of last night’s ICE issue.

This group was entitled, they demanded, they insisted they be given everything, without following the law and that they would tell the rest of us how the United States should operate.

There is no World that I know of where this kind of approach works.

Shame on Skala for being derelict in his duties.

  4. The excuse that certain Board members are simply young and inexperienced is an absolute fallacy
meant to excuse their actions by the above poster.

In fact the truth is that they are, as demonstrated by their actions, Leftist America hating radicals.

  5. Acosta is wrong but there are SO MANY other people who are NOT being held accountable for the AJ crime.

If you want to be transparent start with naming them ALL.

    Name them all.

  6. As the great Rush used to say, “liberalism is a mental disorder”.

Well, now we can truly see those on this board who are the worst of the worst.

  7. Re cynthia comments:

“The crowd was disrespectful, insulting, and confrontational. They wore VIVA LA MEXICO Flags and T-shirts.They yelled and interrupted others. They held up huge signs so no one could see the podium. They called Mike Buehler names.”

    Who were these people?

Were they CITIZENS of the U.S. AND RESIDENTS of McHenry County?

Only U.S. Citizens and McHenry County Residents should have been allowed at the Board Meeting.

A new procedure is needed wherein persons do not get admitted to the Board Room unless they have a valid voter’s ID AND valid picture ID such as a driver’s license.

  8. bred winner, was there last night for a short time.

Didn’t hear any of that but don’t doubt you either.

There was a sign there that said “F…k Ice”

There definitely does need to be a new procedure.

  9. “Only U.S. Citizens and McHenry County Residents should have been allowed at the Board Meeting.”

LOL – that’s not how any of this works.

  10. any one on trial or under trial or pending trial for child endangerment should not be on the county board

Acostas next court date is July 7th if any one is interested in attending

  11. Acosta is wrong but there are SO MANY other people who are NOT being held accountable for the AJ crime.

If you want to be transparent start with naming them ALL.

    Name them all.

Who else should be named in front of the board?

    Andrew Polovin?

He is not an elected official representing McHenry County.

Please tell us who you would like to name and your reasoning for it and if warranted we will be there.

Let us know when and where.

  12. “Only U.S. Citizens and McHenry County Residents should have been allowed at the Board Meeting.”

    Isn’t that how Fascism works?

  13. If there were bad actors as mentioned previous, why weren’t they escorted out by the police?

  14. The YES ones need to go to jail for being unbelievably stupid.

Be sure to shun them publicly.

They don’t belong in any kind of governmental role.

  15. ROAR, Ms. Kotzman (forgive me if incorrect spelling)

May I ask you, did you request that “Examination of Acosta as a competent board member be added to the agenda”? I cannot find anything on the agenda? Did I miss something?

May I also ask you, do you think A.J’s parents would not be prosecuted had you not started your campaign? What role do you think you played in this outcome?
If you recall I was the one who posted in your Facebook group examples of court cases brought forward against DCFS employees when children were hurt or killed so justice has always been a priority for me.

Acosta has been arrested and he is facing trial. I believe in our process,I also believe that people are presumed innocent until found guilty in a trial and that trial does not take place on the street by the public. Period.

I do not support public shaming, intimidation, or harassment. I find the mention of people’s families during this public shaming particularly disturbing and could be borderline threats. Public shaming in an effort to intimidate, bully or comply to “SOMEONE’s” desire for outcome have no place in a civil society let alone a County Board meeting.

Acosta does indeed have children, and those children suffer when this public shaming is done. This I can guarantee. I would be willing to contact the schools where these innocent children attend and get statements from the principles if need be. To claim these efforts of public humiliation of Acosta are about children is simply not true.

Ms Kotzman you have every right to challenge the current regulations and I encourage you to do so because changing the laws will help everyone. Ask the board to install a regulation that anyone accused of a crime, regardless of conviction be removed from the board. What I plan to do is to ask the board to deny ANY efforts of public shaming of any citizen or board member and that only comments for approved agenda items be allowed.

If you are unhappy with the progress of his case then please follow the legal process with your complaint.

Again, I believe in the process, I believe Acosta may be found guilty and at that time I suspect he will resign from the board but last night’s public demonization and public flogging of him does not align with my ideas of Justice.

  16. I’d like to thank the young man who held a prayer circle outside for those who could not get in.

That was awesome and when it came time for me to go in and speak, it gave me the courage to do so and not be bothered by the unwashed that occupied many of those seats booing and hissing at pro-law enforcement speakers.

What a hateful bunch those Abolish ICE, UnAmerican radicals are!

  17. Shame on Skala for not at least phoning in such for an important meeting!

Unless he was disabled in the hospital, there’s no excuse for his lack of participation!

  18. I feel many of those who attended and were disrespectful should have been asked to leave.

I was sitting in the back row so I had access to the worst of it.

I kept flagging the Board members and signaling the Police officers as the ruckus continued.

The Board must NOT ALLOW chaos and disruption.

This kind of thing is intimidating and uncivil.

It sets a tone that should not be tolerated.

Mike warned the crowd twice I think he should have followed through.

I also don’t think anyone should call Board members names.

If they do, they should be asked to sit down or leave.

    It’s unacceptable.

  19. Cynthia – educate us.

Which of those responsible for AJ’s death are not being held accountable?

Tell us so we can hold them accountable.

Which of them hold public office?

All we hear from you are crickets when questioned.

  20. On Acosta’s July 17th court date will Rebecca Lee appear as Counsel?

Wondered who referred this attorney to Acosta?

Could there be a conflict of interest in the chain of various persons in this case?

    It could get interesting.

  21. Excellent comments by cynthia at 3:39 PM today. Agree with her totally.

    My two cents:

People who want to attend and/or make comments at any, ANY, local government and/or community meeting should ONLY be residents and MOST IMPORTANTLY BE US Citizens of that community. Visitors from other communities, States, Countries, Nations, illegal aliens should never be allowed access nor allowed to give input on LOCAL matters.

Would it be ok for a visitor and or a tourist from England, Germany, Somalia, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Canada, etc or an illegal alien from these nations or other nations to give an opinion at the Public Comment section of McHenry County Government or any other government entity in the U.S.?

Of course not. Only a dope, or a Democrat, would give power to illegals, or non-citizens to try to express an opinion to influence decisions on local and government matters.

Illegal aliens and visitors from other nations have no first amendment rights to try to influence matters in the government of the U.S., nationally, state wise or local.

  22. Still nothing from Cynthia on who else should be named.

    Waiting …

  23. Cynthia is a loon. Ugly too. Ad hominem attacks?

Sure they are, but they’re true!

  24. Chase.

She must be waiting for ROAR to name them so she can blast me again for doing so
