I asked state Senator Don DeWitte the following about those voting in favor of the Commonwealth Edison bailout bill:
“Don’t you think people who vote for this can be tagged as a “tax hiker” (because higher rates are subject to local franchise taxes)?”
DeWitte’s reply:
“I suppose they could, based on the source of their power.
“But frankly, I think people are more concerned about having reliable electric service in their communities when they need it.
“For us in the Tri cities, I won’t support this bill without mitigations to assist with the financial burdens of carrying debt service on purchase commitments beyond the proposed shut down dates.
“We have historically had lower electric rates than what markets have typically been, running 10-20% lower than our neighbors using Comm Ed.
“The millions of dollars being pumped into wind and solar development could cover the costs related to the closing of the coal generation facilities.”
