Dave Wasserman in Illinois This Week to Cover Illinois Congressional Redistricting

It’s kind of like a big, nationally televised college football game when ESPN brings in its national studio team for on-site stadium coverage, including days leading up to the big game.

Per tweets from late Sunday night, Dave Wasserman, senior U.S. House editor for Cook Political Reports with Amy Walter will be in Illinois this week.

During the middle of the Illinois General Assembly’s fall veto session where congressional redistricting one of the top topics.

His transcribed tweets:

“In Chicago? Wanna nerd out over redistricting? I’ll be LIVE this Wednesday at University of Chicago politics with the talented Ally Mutnick [POLITICO] interviewing the parties’ top strategists. Be there or be [insert gerrymandered shape here].

“Seriously, there’s no better place to talk gerrymandering right now than the place where it’s the state pastime (and I’ll be meeting w/ key sources there this week. Stay tuned).”

Here’s the official advertising meme from the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics, which is Wasserman’s alma mater:

Yup, I’ve already signed up for the “Drawing Districts: It’s Not Just for the Hunger Games” roundtable late Wednesday afternoon at UC.

Link to register for the free roundtable can be found here.

Please note, Wasserman mentioned in his tweet his real reason for being in Illinois, and that will be to meet with his sources, in person, on what will be the final congressional redistricting map that will emerge approved by the supermajority Democrats in the Illinois General Assembly over the next 10 days.

As told in many places, including here on McHenry County Blog, national Democrats were not happy with the initial draft congressional map issued by the Illinois General Assembly Friday morning, particularly with Governor JB Pritzker influencing the remap with IL House Speaker Chris Welch and IL Senate President Don Harmon to keep Republican Congressmen Adam Kinzinger and Rodney Davis in difficult, yet winnable U.S. House districts to prevent either one of them from running statewide next year, for governor or U.S. Senate.

It will all play out over the next 10 days.
