McHenry Downtown Theater to Close its Doors and Re-focus on Future

[McHenry, Illinois, 11/30/2021—] McHenry Downtown Theater, located at 1208 N. Green Street in McHenry, IL will be closing their doors as a movie theater and focus on yet another revitalization project.

After originally closing shop in 2014, McHenry went without an indoor movie complex until 2018 when local, community investors got together to revitalize and remodel the old, outdated theater.

A complete gut rehab was completed, a third theater and screen added, a welcoming addition to the community of McHenry.

Like many small businesses and privately owned movie theaters across the country, 2020 brought on great challenges.

These challenges included forced closures and delays in new releases that forced theaters to focus on showing throwback movies.

When the delayed releases resumed, there was a priority to also run straight to streaming in parallel, a practice that continues today for many studios.

This, along with rising prices in goods, supply chain woes and staffing challenges, the movie theater business was/is no longer sustainable.

McHenry Downtown Theater began hosting live events one year ago on their newly built stage with a variety of stand-up comedy, live music, and children’s shows.

Guests have included nationally touring comics such as Chris Kattan and Bobcat Goldthwait, acts from America’s Got Talent and even WGN comedian, Pat Tomasulo.

The reaction has been so welcoming, McHenry Downtown Theater has decided to completely move away from the movie theater side of the business and turn their focus to become a live events theater.

This will include an expansion by combining two of the theaters, building an even larger stage, bringing better sound, lights, and seating to position themselves for bigger comics, bigger bands, and a variety of performers.

In addition, there are plans to reserve space for a full-service restaurant and bar to better accommodate patrons attending their live events, enhancing the overall “night-out” experience.

McHenry Downtown Theater is expected to close its doors and discontinue showing movies in the first couple months of 2022 with a plan to move forward with its scheduled live events.

McHenry Downtown Theater is located on historic Green St at 1208 N. Green Street in McHenry, Illinois in between the Hub Market and DC Cobb’s.

  1. Guess they realized the swill from Hollyweird wasn’t bringing in the bucks any more.

  2. It’s awesome that great comedy is out here and that they are gonna do more of it …..don’t have to go to Schaumburg or the ccity.

The comedians that have been through so far are national acts.

Well worth checking out once they are done.

  3. I agree Dingo. Once hollyweirdo’s came out of the woodwork revealing their political ideologies, it turned people off to their socialist communist agenda. They should just shut up and act.

  4. Last movie I went to: Gibson’s ‘Apocylito’. Too much garbage and the kids movies are permeated with gay and trans crap.

  5. I think Hollyweird is on life support anyway.

They seem to be banking on endless woke superhero capeshit movies and mostly garbage as a whole.

Even the braindead, low-IQ regulars are going to get sick of it after a while.

And with endless streaming options, in-house productions from Netflix, Amazon, etc., there isn’t the same market for the old types of mov

    ies.

And covid shutdowns seriously hurt the theaters.

  6. Superman now a fag? What a mindfu– for kids. Who changed the Man of Steel’s sexual orientation to titillate perverts and warp minds?
