Jim Edgar Thinks Dems Have Gone “A Little Too Far” in Lifting Restrictions on Abortion

From a WCIA-TV interview with former Republican Governor Jim Edgar:

Jim Edgar

Edgar held the governor’s office when Republicans briefly took control of the Illinois House after a Republican wave election in 1994.

During that next General Assembly, Edgar, who was pro-choice, signed the Parental Notification Act into law.

That new act would require doctors to inform parents when minors sought abortion services for nearly three decades.

It remained on the law books until Governor Pritzker signed its repeal this year.

“Well, I was a little surprised because I know the public opinion on that,” Edgar said.

“But, you know, there’s concern, I think, at the state level what the Supreme Court might do on the whole question of a woman’s right to choose, and I think there’s a feeling that they have to protect that.

“I think maybe that was a little too far.”

Edgar referred to recent abortion restrictions passed in Texas and Mississippi that are currently before the U.S. Supreme Court and its 6-3 conservative majority. He says he’s concerned the high court could weaken or overturn Roe vs. Wade, and that would be a “step backwards.”

However, he saw the recent move to repeal the parental notification law he signed as another polarizing move that went too far to the left.

“If you look at polling, more people are pro-choice than they are ‘Right to Life.’

“But on this issue, most people think parents have a right to know,” he said.

“Now, one of the issues is what they talked about this time: we wrestled with trying to put safeguards in there, because there are some times where that notification doesn’t work. And there were safeguards we thought put in there.”

Missing from Edgar’s analysis is the even more radical legislation enacted by Illinois Democrats.

That’s the bill that removed all restrictions on abortions other than the parental notice law Edgar references.

Since polling shows a large majority in favor of parental notice, might not at least as large a majority oppose allowing a baby to aborted up until the day before natural birth, as the bill Gov. JB Pritzker signed?

  1. Like everyone else, Edgar has history, I am not surprised he is/was for Parental Notification.

But then again Jim Edgar your parents made a decision for you, didn’t they?

Maybe Edgar should use his Life Experience, as an example for others?

High School can be a confusing time.

  2. “Pro-Choice” is misnamed. It should be “Pro-Death” because it allows the killing of the infant in the womb.

  3. Tik Tok – Jim Edgar was a player in the bringing down of Kemper Insurance Co in Long Grove. He sat on the board. He facilitated passing regulations in IL that allowed a mutual company to be owned by a Holding Company made up of shareholders. He earned 140k / yr to just attend 4 board meetings per year. The Kemper Holding Co issued bonds and the shareholders of the Holding Co get rich off of the spoils of raiding reserves for an improved bottom line. Not the mutual company shareholders, the holding company shareholders.

Kemper before going under owned 7 private jets. Do you think good ole Jimmy took advantage of free travel at the expense of the real shareholders, the policyholders in the mutual company? Guess what happened to the owners of all of those Kemper issued bonds? Too bad, so sad.

Jim Edgar can rot. He is just another swamp rat figuring out how to steal the investing publics and employees hard earned money. May God judge him accordingly in the near future. Don’t even get me into all of the people who worked there their whole life for a pension that disappeared like a fart in the wind. Good thing the leadership took their payouts upfront before the PBGC gave the rest of the workers pennies on the dollar.

  4. Thompson: blackmailed fag & RINO

    Edgar: filthy crook & RINO

    Ryan: fithy crook & RINO

  5. WOW. The good ol’ days. I had forgotten about Kemper. Wasn’t he the last governor that didn’t go to jail?

  6. Bruce Rauner went to Florida, not to jail. Pat Quinn did not go to jail.

  7. Hopefully soon Geal, hopefully soon.

The bright side is that the great bulk of damage has already been done. He can’t do too much more damage.
