Declaring “Springfield is broken,” Illinois House Deputy Republican Leader Tom Demmer kicked off his campaign for state treasurer on Tuesday, positioning himself to face off against two-term incumbent Democrat Mike Frerichs….Calling himself a fiscal watchdog, Demmer slammed his Democratic opponent as a member of the “tax-and-spend Springfield crowd” and part of the “Springfield machine. Let’s speak plainly. Springfield is broken,” Demmer says in the two-minute video. “Springfield politicians won’t change overnight, but we can take an important first step by electing a proven fiscal watchdog.”
State Rep. Tom Demmer of Dixon announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for state treasurer Tuesday, stressing his opposition to tax increases and a desire to bring greater transparency to state spending.
Demmer attacked Frerichs for supporting income-tax hikes, including a proposed tax on retirement income.
Viewed as a rising star in the Republican Party, Demmer has hinted for at least a year that he was eyeing higher office.
Demmer’s clearest path to victory is hammering Frerichs over his June 2020 remarks that enacting a graduated income tax might pave the way for taxing retirement income in the highest earning brackets…To the extent Demmer is known he seems well regarded. Depending on his long-term goals, toppling Frerichs may be the easiest of his future chosen battles – relatively speaking.
One of the brightest young stars in Republican politics is setting his sights on statewide office. Rep. Tom Demmer (R-Dixon), who has served in the House since 2013, announced Tuesday he plans to challenge Democratic State Treasurer Mike Frerichs in the November general election.
He said he’s a “proven financial watchdog” and that he would advocate for tax cuts for the middle class and putting families first in Springfield. Demmer, the Illinois House deputy minority leader, cited his previous work as the leading Republican on the House Special Investigating Committee of former longtime Democratic Speaker Michael Madigan. He’s also one of the House Republicans’ lead negotiators on the state budget and Medicaid legislation.
Demmer accused incumbent Frerichs and the General Assembly of allowing tax increases and spending that have caused families to leave Illinois..He also accused Frerichs of spending his 15-year career in Springfield supporting tax increases, including the failed 2020 Fair Tax amendment proposed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
