Declaring “Springfield is broken,” Illinois House Deputy Republican Leader Tom Demmer kicked off his campaign for state treasurer on Tuesday, positioning himself to face off against two-term incumbent Democrat Mike Frerichs….Calling himself a fiscal watchdog, Demmer slammed his Democratic opponent as a member of the “tax-and-spend Springfield crowd” and part of the “Springfield machine. Let’s speak plainly. Springfield is broken,” Demmer says in the two-minute video. “Springfield politicians won’t change overnight, but we can take an important first step by electing a proven fiscal watchdog.”

One of the brightest young stars in Republican politics is setting his sights on statewide office. Rep. Tom Demmer (R-Dixon), who has served in the House since 2013, announced Tuesday he plans to challenge Democratic State Treasurer Mike Frerichs in the November general election.

He said he’s a “proven financial watchdog” and that he would advocate for tax cuts for the middle class and putting families first in Springfield. Demmer, the Illinois House deputy minority leader, cited his previous work as the leading Republican on the House Special Investigating Committee of former longtime Democratic Speaker Michael Madigan. He’s also one of the House Republicans’ lead negotiators on the state budget and Medicaid legislation.


Demmer accused incumbent Frerichs and the General Assembly of allowing tax increases and spending that have caused families to leave Illinois..He also accused Frerichs of spending his 15-year career in Springfield supporting tax increases, including the failed 2020 Fair Tax amendment proposed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

Demmer accuses Frerichs of constantly voting to raise taxes during his time in the legislature, and claims Frerichs wants to tax retirement income.“Throughout his fifteen years as a Springfield politician, Mike Frerichs continually voted to raise your taxes,” said Demmer. “And now, he even wants to tax your retirement.”

He says he’ll be on the side of Illinois families and work to protect their hard-earned dollars by shining a light on how tax dollars are spent. A Republican State Representative is taking a shot at achieving a top state executive office.  90th District Representative Tom Demmer of Dixon announced his bid today for Illinois State Treasurer. Demmer is hoping to unseat two-term Democrat incumbent Michael Frerichs.  Demmer said in a video announcement posted to his social media today that he will protect Illinois taxpayers by opposing tax increases, noting that Frerichs once suggested that Illinois should consider taxing retirement income, something the state does not currently do.
