Flashback 2020: Indictments not a dealbreaker for Ness when choosing a leader

SPRINGFIELD, IL – While many Illinois politicians were quick to react to the U.S. Attorney’s announcement of the 22-count indictment against former House Speaker Michael Madigan last week, State Representative Suzanne Ness was not one of them. Instead, it took over 24 hours and a public shaming before she issued her response filled with revisionist history.

Representative Ness’ commitment to battling corruption is questionable based on past comments made weeks after her election.

The Representative-elect told the Northwest Herald, “Future indictments, if something comes out specifically against the Speaker, that might influence me.”

“It’s clear the former Speaker’s ethical and legal problems were of no concern to Representative Ness with $1.2 million in campaign contributions in play.

“If federal indictments are not an immediate dealbreaker for Representative Ness when choosing a leader, it should be for voters when choosing a state representative.

“To fully move past the Madigan era, we must defeat those who are unfazed by betrayal of the public’s trust.”

To date, Representative Ness also has not indicated whether she will donate Madigan’s $1.2 million in campaign contributions.
