Non-Profit Status Ends Chicago Sun-Times’ Political Endorsements

Back in 1972, I was endorsed for the Illinois House by the Chicago Sun-Times.

I remember because it was the first time I was labeled “an Independent Republican.”

It was not a term I had ever used to describe myself.

I was twenty-eight at the time.

When I attended the meeting to select a new House Speaker, Decatur’s Webber Borchers, whom I learnered later was a World War I Veteran and the University of Illinois’ first Chief Illiniwek, came up to me and asked, “Are you a conservative Republican?”

I replied that I was “a Republican.”

Now comes the Chicago Sun-Times announcing,

“Times change, however. The Sun-Times is now a nonprofit news outlet, an affiliate of Chicago Public Media and a partner with WBEZ. This partnership — one of the largest nonprofit news operations in the country — is supported by private foundations and other donors who stepped up because they believe the Chicago metro area must maintain robust, competitive local media…

“‘What about endorsements?’

“As a nonprofit, the Sun-Times can no longer make endorsements.

“The IRS guidance governing 501(c)3 nonprofits is clear on this point, and we want to make sure our readers are aware of that.”

  1. Trib was not bad until 2008 when they endorsed the community organizer for president, Barak Hussein Obama. He took over the title of worst ever president of the U.S. from Jimmy Carter. Then along comes Joseph Robinette Biden who clearly now is the undisputed worst ever president of the U.S. We can thank most of the media, including the tech giants who are on the internet, for getting Robinette elected by hiding numerous of his incompetentcies and stupidity in the 2020 election year thus fooling/misleading many millions of American voters.

  2. Bred is wrong about that date.

Kass says it started downhill fast after 1980.
