PRO Act: As Governors JB Pritzker and Gavin Newsom Prepare to Run for President to Potentially Face Each Other Flashback to Late 1980s Comes to Mind

As Governors Newsom and Pritzker galivant across the country exploring presidential runs before current President announces his plans I couldn’t resist this comparison on live stream discussing PRO Act and CA AB5

Those McHenry County Blog readers old enough to remember the 1980s and the NBA playoffs with the Los Angeles Lakers’ perennial runs to the title during that decade, winning five titles in the hey day of “Showtime”, and a team that never got over the hump in the Utah Jazz, this quote was featured by me.

The live stream was hosted by Steve (“Rideshare Rodeo”) and his guest was Massachusetts-based labor law attorney Michael Hruby.

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D, San Francisco) has a nickname of “Governor Hair Gel”, the former Los Angeles Lakers Coach Pat Riley comparison valid, and IL Governor JB Pritzker (D, Chicago) appearance came up this past Sunday on Beyond the Beltway with Bruce DuMont where the panel talked about personal appearance being important in a presidential run especially given Newsom’s youthful look in his mid 50s while Pritzker is less than 3 years older.

Frank Layden
Pat Riley

For the younger readers who do not remember or know of the two legendary NBA head coaches of that time, Frank Layden and Pat Riley, both pics are from the 1980s, as Layden retired from coaching in 1989.

Riley went on to be head coach of the Miami Heat and is currently the president of the Heat organization in South Florida.

Some irony there, too, as both Newsom and Pritzker put in appearances in Florida in the past month with both governors aiming at the governor of Florida as a potential presidential nominee one Ron DeSantis (R, FL).

Maybe Pritzker can emulate Coach Layden in this famous 1988 playoff highlight with the infamous hair combing mock at Coach Riley at a game at the old Salt Palace in Salt Lake City during the Western Conference Semifinals in which I remember seeing live back in 88 (apologies for the poor video quality):

The live stream about labor law, including the California AB5 law at the heart of the recent truckers protests in California over the past two weeks and the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, along with my featured online commentary, can be viewed here.

  1. Pop up the popcorn … dumb and dumber are taking the stage … should be a really loser show…. both are in chit holes states they created…. oh yeah its a race who is the most lowest… if that’s even possible… scrap them barrels boys..

  2. Jason Whitlock recently compared the Pritzker/Newsom show to Norm and Sam Malone of Cheers.

He thinks it’s all a setup to push Newsom’s candidacy.

Just as Norm served to make the highly-flawed Sam look good by comparison, Pritzer is doing the same thing for Newsom.

I think Whitlock has a good point.

Just about anyone would look like a more plausible presidential candidate when compared to JB.
