Toyota Driver Dies in Crash with Semi on Route 23 North of Marengo

Fatal Crash in Marengo

On August 16, 2022, at 03:34 a.m., the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Marengo Fire and Rescue Department responded to a traffic crash on Rt. 23 north of Busse Road in Marengo.

Upon arrival, responding units located two vehicles fully engulfed in flames.

Preliminary investigation indicates a 2009 Toyota was traveling northbound and a 2022 Freightliner was traveling southbound on Rt. 23 north of Busse Road, unincorporated Marengo.

For unknown reasons, the Toyota crossed the center line of the roadway, where it was struck by the southbound Freightliner.

Subsequently, both vehicles caught fire.

The driver of the Freightliner was able to exit his vehicle.

The driver of the Toyota was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Freightliner, a 52-year-old male from Harvard, was transported to Northwestern Huntley Hospital and released.

The identification of the driver of the Toyota is pending.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this crash, or whether the driver of the Toyota was wearing a seat belt.

This crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
