Rep. Suzanne Ness voted to give herself a pay raise while Illinois families struggle to make ends meet
GENEVA, IL … Illinois State Representative for the 66th District Suzanne Ness is under pressure to explain why she voted to give herself a pay raise while raising taxes on Illinois families at a time when so many are struggling to make ends meet.
Rep. Ness voted for HB 4700 and HB 0900 to give herself a $2,700 raise, making her and her colleagues the fourth-highest paid legislators in the nation.
According to the Comptroller’s website, one year ago, Rep. Ness made $5,900 per month, and she now makes $6,100 per month.
“Unfortunately, average Illinoisans can’t just vote to give themselves a pay raise when times are tough, like Rep. Ness,” said Candidate for the 66th District Connie Cain.
“Illinoisans are experiencing record inflation on top of one of the highest tax burdens in the country, and Rep. Ness and her majority party have failed to bring substantive relief.
Illinois’ new base salary for legislators before committee assignments and leadership positions (which can add tens of thousands of dollars more a year) in Illinois is now $73,345, double the average salary for a state legislator in the United States.
This does not include the travel and lodging reimbursements, or the $151 legislators receive each day they are in session.
This is the second time Rep. Ness has voted to give herself a pay raise since taking office in 2021.
