Amtrak Service to Quincy

A headline from NPR on Monday brought up a cost-benefit analysis memory from the 1970’s.

The question at hand was whether State taxpayers should subsidize passenger train traffic between Chicago and Quincy.

The argument was made that students would not be able to get from home to college and back without a state-subsidized Amtrak service.

I assumed all the passengers were students and divided that number into the proposed subsidy.

The result was a $3,500 subsidy per passenger.

Amtrak train moves slowly through Downtown Springfield, Illinois.

My argument on the House floor was that we could afford to buy eac student a $3,500 car with one year’s subsidy.

Now, Amtrak is going to provide dedicated bus service for the suspended train service.

  1. On another rail matter:

“Section ten of House Bill 399 states: “The High-Speed Railway Commission shall create a statewide plan for a high-speed rail line and feeder network connecting St. Louis, Missouri and Chicago, Illinois that includes current existing Amtrak and Metra services, connects the cities of Rockford, Moline, Peoria, and Decatur, and uses inter-city bus service to coordinate with the rail line.”

Is this still a “Go” per the toilet governor and his Democrat stooges?
