Michael Chmiel

The days of James Cowlin being the Chief Judge of the McHenry County Circuit Court are drawing to a close.

He was elected to that post in 2018 and will step down this December.

Cowlin will be replaced by Judge Michael Chmiel.

Chmiel was elected last week by the eight Circuit Court Judges on a 7-0 vote with one Judge abstaining.

Cowlin succeeded Judge Michael Sullivan, who served as Chief Judge since 2006 until his retirement.

Chmiel was appointed Circuit Court Judge in 2004 by Supreme Court Justice Bob Thomas, for whom he was the McHenry County campaign chairman.

Subsequently he won election to the office.

Reports are that there will be significant changes after Chmiel takes office.
