Cost of McHenry County Jail Inmate Calls Less than Allowed under New Proposed Federal Limit

A recent Chicago Tribune story about a new law signed by President Joe Biden had the following paragraph:

One young Chinese political leader pretended to be phoning home when she visited the McHenry County Jail.

At the McHenry County Jail, the cost is 21 cents a minute.

That’s less than the proposed Federal Communications Commission limit of 25 cents a minute.

  1. Great, now the Chinese know we’re also years behind on Prisoner Organ Harvesting.

  2. Whether they’re in the pokey, or driving here and there, they just can’t leave that phone alone.

  3. The story is about the FCC thinking about imposing a maximum rate at which jails and prisons can charge prisoners for calls.

  4. The caption?

One young Chinese political leader pretended to be phoning home when she visited the McHenry County Jail.

  5. ^ The story is it looks like a misleading headline – could be deliberate to make Biden look bad or could be accidental because Cal makes errors.

Either way, the headline is not good.

A cap means the maximum allowed.

If there is a cap at 25 and McHenry county charges 21 then it’s no big deal.

    They could continue charging 21.

They could charge no more than 25.

It means places above the cap would have to lower their rate to 25.

The rule would be to get places to quit charging so much money for calls.

Where does it say McHenry County would have to raise it to 25???

(That’s what one might interpret by reading this headline.)

If they were imposing a flat one size fits all price of 25 cents, yes, that would raise our rates, but this says it is a *cap* of 25 cents.

Based on what Cal copy and pasted and the articles I read, it sounds like a jail would not be “allowed” to charge *more* than 25 cents.

Where does it say a jail would not be “allowed” to charge under 25 cents?

    Terribly worded headline.

Plenty of things to criticize Biden for.

No need to make yourself look silly by saying something means the opposite of what it means.

  6. Okay, never mind.

I got the story, it’s pretty black and white.

What I was asking was why the picture is captioned as “…Chinese political leader”?

  7. Don’t be fooled.

    The prison system is corrupt.

You may think that those that commit a crime deserve nothing, but what about forgiveness and redemption?

What about the families of the criminal.

Should they be punished and condemn as well with the high cost of having a loved one incarcerated?

Who do you think is paying for those phone calls.

So much corruption and evil all for power, money and control. Who always pays for it! US, the tax payers.

Be careful what you believe to be right or wrong.

Do your research. Search for the bigger picture and the greater and longer impacted.

  8. Prior to the SAFE-T act if you were arrested and needed to stand trial and could not afford bail you would be held in the jail until the conclusion of your trial.

Which means that the defendant could be in the jail for weeks or months depending on the court backlog and complexity of the trial.

You think it’s fitting that someone be totally unable to contact friends, family or attorneys?
