New IRS data: Illinois the nation’s 3rd-biggest loser of people and wealth to other states

Analysis of 2020-2021 tax return data shows Illinois lost a net 105,000 residents and a record $10.9 billion in income in 2020 to other states

CHICAGO (April 27, 2023) – Illinois continues to bleed people to other states.

A Wirepoints analysis of the Internal Revenue Service’s latest 2020-2021 taxpayer data shows Illinois lost a net 105,000 residents in 2020, the 3rd-worst loss of any state.

A total of 166,000 people moved into Illinois from other states in 2020, while 271,000 moved out of Illinois, resulting in that net loss of 105,000.

That’s the 2nd-worst loss of people in a single year Illinois has experienced since at least the year 2000.

Those leaving, on net, took over $10.9 billion in incomes with them – also the 3rd-worst loss of any state.

The latest IRS state-by-state migration data is based on tax returns filed in 2020 and 2021, covering taxpayers who moved from one state to another between 2019 and 2020. Wirepoints’ analysis includes a breakdown of migration data for all 50 states.

Wirepoints President Ted Dabrowski weighed in on the new IRS numbers: “Illinois continues to be a national outlier when it comes to losing people to other states. We’re chronically losing our residents, their wealth and their productivity. And as more people leave, Illinois’ crushing debt burden rises on those who remain.”

  1. Well when you import illegals thanks to Bruce Rauner opening the gates to illegals under the guise of a sanctuary state what do you expect. I’m not a stupid liberal so maybe one of them that post here can explain it to me.

  2. Illinois has its problems with illegal immigration, especially being a sanctuary state, but this study is not about that, JT.

The study had to do with domestic interstate “migration” as in Americans moving from one state to another.

And as to the imbalance of incomes, it can likely be explained by brain drain which is something that is going to happen when you have a poorly run state.

Illinois consistently ranks poorly in terms of the unemployment rate.

Its overall tax burden is among the highest.

Cost to do business is high.

Its credit rating is among the worst (people can see the writing on the wall, know that translates to higher future taxes).
People would rather not live in a state paying high taxes for mediocre services.

Usually I rag on Wirepoints but this article is kind of interesting.

There are a lot of neat charts in it if you click on the blue link.

Skinner only shared one, but the story has seven charts — some of which you might find more interesting than the one he shared.

  3. No you’re just a stupid Conservative. but that is beside the point.
