Wirepoints Launches Chicago Weekly Crime Tracker 

Crime has become the most existenital issue for Chicago

CHICAGO – Wirepoints has launched an online Chicago crime tracker which will allow users to view a full range of Chicago Police Department crime data.

The tracker will be updated weekly. It includes data comparisons over time, year-end crime data from 2018-2022, as well as weekly totals for all major crimes including homicides, criminal sexual assault, robbery, aggravated battery, burglary, theft and motor vehicle theft. 

“Chicago crime is increasingly a national media narrative. Chicagoans and the rest of the nation deserve a clear view of what exactly is happening in the city,” said Wirepoints President Ted Dabrowski. 

“Unfortunately, the true scope of Chicago crime can’t be easily understood. Shootings and homicides are reported one week only to be overridden by new shootings and homicides the next week. The city’s own public statistics are difficult to both find and comprehend. Even worse, politicians – along with many in the media – often excuse or downplay the city’s displays of violence. “It’s just a big city problem,” they say. Or “it’s not as bad as it was in the 90s,” ignoring that Chicago currently has a homicide rate five times that of New York City’s.”

Wirepoints will add additional data to the page over the next few weeks, including arrest rates, CTA crime data, police officer counts and neighborhood-specific stats.

Key data points include: 

• Last week major crimes were up 23%, totaling 1,287 vs. 1,045 during the same week last year. 
• Chicago’s count of major crimes YTD is 43% higher compared to the same period in 2022.
• Motor vehicle thefts, already at 10,124, are up 130% YTD compared to the same time last year.
• Chicago has reigned as the nation’s murder capital for 11 years running. The last time the Windy City wasn’t number one was in 2011, when New York had 515 murders and Chicago had 431.
• Chicago’s homicide rate per 100k in 2022 was 25.8 – 5 times higher than New York City’s 5.2.
