Why Should Municipalities Have to Play “Mother, May I?” with IDOT to Spend Motor Fuel Tax Money?

State government sends most money to local governments from three sources:

  • Sales Tax
  • Income Tax and
  • Motor Fuel Tax

There is no requirement for prior approval before cities and villages spend Sales and Income Tax money.

However, there is for Motor Fuel Taxes.

This topic came to mind as I was reading the agenda for the Tuesday meeting of the Lakewood Village Board.

Here’s what caught my attention:

Consideration of Resolution for Use of 2020/2021 MFT Funds as Discovered During MFT Audit

Apparently, Lakewood forgot to play “Mother, may I?”

Here’s what the money will be spent for:

And FOUR copies are required.

What bureaucracy.

What unnecessary bureaucracy.
