On October 20, 2024, at 1:54 p.m., the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District responded to a report of a water rescue near Burton’s Bridge on Route 176. Initial information indicated that one person was reported missing, and an overturned jet ski was seen in the middle of the Fox River.
While enroute, additional resources were requested through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), including water rescue personnel and sonar teams. Staging for the incident was established near the scene off Route 176.
Crews thoroughly searched the river, and at 3:06 p.m., tragically located the missing individual in the water. Following the recovery, operations were scaled back, and crews began picking up and demobilizing.
A second jet skier, traveling in tandem on a separate watercraft, declined medical treatment at the scene. Since the incident occurred on the Fox River, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is investigating the incident and any additional questions pertaining to the investigation (cause, fault, seat-belt use, speeds, etc.) should be referred to them.
The Nunda Rural Fire Protection District extends our appreciation and gratitude to the surrounding agencies who assisted at the scene and covered our District during the incident.
