From the Cary Fire Protection District:

Vehicle Fire Closes Route 14

On January 13, 2025, at 4:02 p.m., the Cary Fire Protection District was dispatched to the intersection of Cary Algonquin Road and Northwest Highway (Route 14) for a reported motor vehicle crash.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed a two-door sedan with heavy fire showing from the engine compartment, located in the median just east of the intersection.

Crews quickly determined the incident was not a crash but a single-vehicle fire.

Firefighters quickly deployed a hose line and contained the fire to the engine compartment.

The driver, a male teenager, was able to exit the vehicle before the fire spread and was unharmed.

Despite the containment, the vehicle was considered a total loss.

Route 14 was closed in both directions for nearly two hours while crews worked to ensure the area was safe and cleared.

The roadway iced over quickly due to the firefighting efforts and air temperatures in the teens.

Salt trucks were requested to the scene to treat the slick road conditions.
