From Crystal Lake Grade School District 47:
Immigration Concerns
We recognize the concerns our families and staff may have due to recent changes in immigration policies and the possibility of mass deportations. District 47 is dedicated to keeping our schools a safe, supportive space where all students and staff can focus on learning.
The Department of Homeland Security rescinded guidelines on January 21, 2025, that previously limited federal law enforcement immigration actions within protected areas, including schools, churches, and college campuses. ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are no longer prohibited from conducting enforcement operations, including, arrests, in or around schools. However, any law enforcement official (e.g., Immigration and Customs Enforcement or ICE) must present proper documentation before accessing school premises or interacting with students.
All children residing in the United States have the right to attend public schools, regardless of their immigration status or that of their parents/guardians. We do not inquire about immigration status or require families to provide documentation for enrollment. The District is committed to protecting student privacy to help ensure that students’ learning environments remain uninterrupted by immigration enforcement, to the greatest extent permitted by law.
District 47 staff are being provided resources and guidance about student rights and protections while interacting with law enforcement agencies such as ICE and CBP. Our school leadership teams are aware of the new guidelines and will collaborate with district administration and legal counsel to address the changing landscape while maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.
