Found in Governor JB Pritzker’s speech today is a township government consolidation proposal.
The graphic appears below:

The would lower the petition signature requirement for a referendum to abolish a township from 10% to 5%.
More interesting to me is the proposal to eliminate elected township assessors where there are fewer than 5,000 people.
That figure is what popped out of Algonquin Township Assessor Forrest B. Hare’s analysis of assessment uniformity and population.
There was a big difference between uniformity in townships with more than 5,000 people and smaller ones.
Now, comes the Pritzker Administration fifty years later using the same number.
In McHenry County, the following small townships do not have candidates for Township Assessor:
- Burton (4,820 in 2020)
- Coral (3,638 in 2020)
- Hartland (2,031 in 2020)
- Seneca (2,893 in 2020)
