From McHenry County Board member and former Nunda Township Trustee Mike Shorten:
Mike Shorten, Candidate for Nunda Township Supervisor, Exposes Incumbent’s Alleged Violations of State Laws
Crystal Lake, IL – Mike Shorten, Republican candidate for Nunda Township Supervisor, today disclosed alleged violations by incumbent Supervisor Linda Drain. Shorten claims
Drain has not complied with the Illinois Public Aid Code and the Township Code in handling General Assistance funds and paying authorized bills.
He also called on Township Clerk Joni Smith to set aside her personal allegiances and fulfill her duties by revoking Drain’s bond and pursuing legal action as prescribed in Illinois State Law. (60 ILCS 1/70-5).
“The apparent mismanagement and disregard for legal obligations are unacceptable,” said Shorten. “Our township deserves leadership that adheres to the law and prioritizes the needs and trust of its residents.”
Key Points of Concern:
- Illinois Public Aid Code Violation: Shorten alleges Drain failed to follow 305 ILCS 5/6-11a, which requires a township policy for General Assistance services. A FOIA response from incumbent Supervisor Leda Drain revealed no such policy exits.
- Township Code Violation: According to Shorten, Drain violated 60 ILCS 1/80-50 by not paying an attorney’s bill that was approved at the March 14th, 2024 Nunda Board meeting within the required 20 days. The attorney was hired to address allegations against Highway Commissioner “Iron Mike” Lesperance regarding misuse of taxpayer funds.
- Failure to Address Notifications: Shorten states that despite notifications, Drain has not rectified these issues. She failed to present a corrective General Assistance policy at the February 13th, 2025 board meeting, and the approval on the unpaid legal bill was issued more than 11 months ago.
“Linda Drain’s failure to rectify these issues, even after being notified, shows a blatant disregard for her responsibilities. This is about accountability and ensuring our township is managed with integrity and effectiveness,” Shorten remarked.
Shorten emphasized that Drain’s failure to meet legal obligations disqualifies her from office, urging voters to recognize the seriousness of the violations.
He advocates for ethical, responsible leadership for Nunda Township and criticizes Drain for hiring family, bloating pay, and seeking a salary increase of 25%.
“Nunda Township needs immediate change. We need leaders who are committed to transparency and good governance, not corruption and self-interest,” Shorten stated.
